Mack Draft: - Nick Ramirez, Clemson, Jonathan Cornelius, Harold Martinez, Ray Black, Arizona State, George Springer, and Bryan Brickhouse

The Mack Draft Report - Dec. 11, 2010

Nick Ramirez: - http://www.collegebaseballdaily.com/  - We continue the countdown today at number 41 with Cal-State Fullerton junior infielder/LHP Nick Ramirez. The Anaheim California native attended Katella High School where he played under Carlos Ayala and Jimmy Valverde. As a senior, he help lead the Knights to an Empire League championship in 2008 while taking home the league’s most valuable player trophy. He was also named a three-time All-Empire League first teamer (2006-08) and was also named the Knight’s MVP each of those years. He also was named All-Orange County, All-CIF and high school All-American in 2008.

Draft Picks for Crawford: - For starters, the Rays will receive the Red Sox first round draft pick, #24 overall. This gives the Rays two picks in the first round, the Red Sox, #24 and their own, #32. In addition to the Red Sox first round pick, the Rays will receive a pick in the supplemental round between the first and second round. The pick number is determined by the inverse order of the 2010 standings for teams that lost a Type A free agent. - http://www.baseballrumormill.com/

Clemson: - http://baseballdraftreport.com/  - Clemson’s 2008 group of signees included Kevin Brady, David Haselden, Will Lamb, Brad Miller, Scott Weismann, Jason Stolz, Ethan Martin, and Chris Dwyer. I realize you can do that with the recruiting class of a major college program almost any year, but something about this class intrigued me. A college rotation of Dwyer, Martin (who I loved as a high school prospect), and Brady would have been fun.

Jonathan Cornelius: - http://www.collegesummerbaseball.net/2010/12/top-performers-from-2010-jonathan.html  - My next top performer from the 2010 summer season is Jonathan Cornelius of the Martinsville Mustangs. Jonathan is a Senior LHP from Florida Tech University. He is 6-0/183 pounds and he hails from Land O'Lakes, Florida. He attended and played baseball at Land O'Lakes High School. He had a very productive 2010 season for Florida Tech. He went 8-4 and had a 4.17 era in a team-high 90.2 innings pitched. He also fanned 95 batters last season.

Harold Martinez: - http://www.collegebaseballdaily.com/2010/12/10/top-100-countdown-42-harold-martinez-miami/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+CollegeBaseballDaily+%28College+Baseball+Daily%29&utm_content=Twitter  - We continue the countdown today at number 42 with Miami junior third baseman Harold Martinez. The Miami, Florida, native attended Braddock High School. He has an outstanding senior year where he hit .410 with eight homers and 27 RBI with him being named first-team all-county. He also had a strong junior season with a .500 average with three homers and 23 RBI. After his senior season, the Texas Rangers selected him in the 19th round but were not able to keep Harold away from Coral Gables as he went to play under legendary Hurricanes coach Jim Morris.

One player added to my top 150 is RHP, Ray Black, soph-eligible due to 45 day birthdate within the MLB DRAFT eligibility rules, he will be 21 late June 2011. Ray is 6'4 plus and 220, throws from 3/4 arm slot, loose out front, a bit of a hook in the back swing, projectible frame and good tenacity as a pitcher, was reportedly up to 97 on the stalker this fall for U of Pittsburgh. Ray also possesses a straight change and hard curveball that has good downward tilt and bite to be a plus pitch. His control from the numbers I saw on his stat profile were pretty good over the summer and last spring. Good bloodlines as well. - http://xmlbscout.angelfire.com/

Arizona State: - http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=5132  - The Sun Devils return six position players who hit better than .337 after playing in at least 41 games. The top guys back are junior infielder Riccio Torrez (.393, 10 HRs, 54 RBIs), junior infielder Zack McPhee (.389, 9 HRs, 14 triples, 64 RBIs), junior infielder Zach Wilson (.349, 8 HRs, 45 RBIs), junior outfielder Johnny Ruettiger (.351) and sophomore infielder Deven Marrero (.397, 6 HRs, 42 RBIs, 156 ABs).

Senior outfielder Drew Haynes, junior second baseman Ryan Wright and sophomore pitcher Matt Koch have been selected as team captains for the University of Louisville baseball team for the 2011 season. The selections were voted on by the Cardinal players and coaches. Haynes, a native of New Albany, Ind., hit .291 and was 15-of-22 on stolen bases while starting all 64 games in the outfield last season. Through his first three seasons as a Cardinal, Haynes has 160 career starts and has played in 186 games, just 56 shy of the U of L school record of 242. Wright, from Fort Wayne, Ind., hit .366 with 16 home runs and 80 RBI to earn Second Team All-America (Baseball America) and First Team All-BIG EAST honors in 2010. A Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2009, Wright followed his sophomore season with an impressive summer for the USA Collegiate National Team hitting .361 overall with 18 runs scored, two home runs and 12 RBI in 19 games. - http://www.uoflsports.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/120610aaa.html

George Springer OF, UConn - http://www.draftsite.com/article/2011-MLB-Draft-Preview-College-Hitters/43  - At this point Springer is more of a swinger than he is a hitter. The tool that is going to carry him is going to be his power. With a long, lean, athletic build at 6’3" and 200 lbs, Springer has room to grow and it should allow him to hit for more power down the road. At the plate, he produces very good bat speed and loft in his swing. Presently, he is more a pull hitter, which isn’t a big surprise at this age. However he can get into trouble by cheating some, and diving for the ball instead of staying back. In the field his arm and speed are at average or a tick below, but should be more than enough for left field at the next level.

Bryan Brickhouse - rhp - The Woodlands HS, The Woodlands, Texas - Brickhouse had one of the better pure arms at the Games, showing low-90s velocity out of a quick arm. That arm speed also produces above-average bite on a hard low- to mid-80s slider that flashes both tilt and late dive. His curve is a softer breaker, generally sitting in the mid- to upper-70s with inconsistent shape, and while he doesn't throw it often, Brickhouse can drop a nice change-up from time-to-time, coming with some deception and drop and a nice 10-12 mph velo difference off of his fastball. He is a high effort arm, complete with a not insignificant head whack, that will suffer through bouts of control issues. http://diamondscapescouting.com/articles_2010acg_wraps_part1_11162010.htm

SP Nick Burdi - Downers Grove South HS (IL) - 6'3”, 210, R/R - Burdi is another pitcher who really improved his draft status over the course of last summer and into the fall. He participated in the Under Armour game at Wrigley Field, and was arguably the most impressive pitcher in attendance. He continued to impress at the Perfect Game/WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, where he was one of the hardest throwers in attendance, hitting 96 on the gun. He also touch 91 with his nasty slider at that event, but typically sits in the low-80s with this pitch. He shows the ability to add some sink to his fastball, and his slider has two-plane break, and is one of the better breaking balls from the prep class. Despite his larger, sturdy stature, he throws from a low three-quarters delivery, although that arm angle definitely complements his slider. He can also throw a changeup, but hasn’t needed it much given the success of his fastball-breaking ball. He has committed to play for Louisville. http://www.5tooltalk.com/topprospects.html
