Mack Ade – Morning Report – 6-7-13

Azeem Kazi (Monroe) - Cesar Puello now OPSing .999 after 2 more homers today, is he a legit prospect?
Keith Law - Legit prospect, yes. Don't think he's a future star.

Got a little time on my hands waiting for the draft.

OF Cesar Puello hit two more home runs in the 5-4 daytime win against Trenton. That’s now 12-HR’s, a .320 BA, and a 1.000+ OPS… a rare earned run given up by Jack Leathersich (0.2-IP, 1-H, 2-BB, 2-K). The Mets tried to use him as the 7th-8th inning guy; however, Jeff Walters had to come in early and everything worked out (1.2-IP, win, 2.45). The strange this is Walters didn’t give up a run, but was accredited with a blown save (probably a run from a player that Leathersich left on base).  Another game with no Cory Vaughn in the lineup.

The DSL teams are ‘apagado y funcionamiento’ (off and running) and some early stat lines:

                C-3B Victor Moscote - .429/.500/.643/1.143
                3B Gregory Valencia - .313/.313/.313/.625
                CF John Mora - .300/.462/.500/.962
                SP Eucebio Arias – 1-ST, 5.0-IP, 0.00, 0.80
                SP Jose Mendez – 1-ST, 5.0-IP, 0.00, 0.80
                SP Darwin Ramos – 1-ST, 4.0-IP, 0.00, 0.75
                SP Jose Medina – 1-ST, 3.0-IP, 0.00, 1.00

Andy Martino ‏@MartinoNYDN - The fallacy of asking athletes for comment on a personal issue affecting a teammate is that they very rarely care about one another.

Would you please try and explain to me why any ballplayer would give this little pissant the time of day, no less inside information about this team?

From Howard Megdal –

While all of this is resolved, one way or another, 29 other teams, flush with new television money that will put an additional $50 million in their coffers in 2014, but without the need to go through a Queen of Versailles-style gauntlet to spend, can also bid on Choo and other free agents. So the Mets certainly have holes, between an outfield in need of three starters next season (Marlon Byrd's recent hot streak notwithstanding), possible starters at shortstop, first base, even catcher, depending on the progress and recovery of Travis d'Arnaud. But Jeff Wilpon is right: Mets fans really need to be patient. Wilpon and his partners have lots to do before Sandy Alderson's plan can include anything like spending money on baseball players.

You have to respect Howard for continuing to go down the same road regarding the Wilpons. I love it because it makes me the second least favorite Mets writer in the organization. The good news for him is he has a union card, thus, gets inside the fence.

I don’t know the Wilpons so I can’t tell you if I like them or not. I simply wish they would sell the team to some other group of people that would run it differently than they do.

Howard’s contempt seems to be more personal, but that’s just my opinion.

I actually have a lot of time on my hands on the first day of the draft. ‘We’ get two picks, so, here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to type out my thoughts as the draft goes on and we’ll see how my guesses turn out. I’ll also tell you what I think about what had just happened.

6:45pm – My guess at this point is Houston will start this draft by picking Mark Appel. There still is a lot of chatter that they are still talking to a number of players right now, but I can’t see them passing on this ++ pitcher.
7:02pm – Keith Law said Houston will pick Mark Appel.
7:06pm – Opening comments by the Commish are even late.
7:10pm – Ben Badler said the Astros will pick Appel.
7:11pm – It was Appel. Smart move. And, he gets to play in his home state. There can’t be anyone more happy than he and his family right now.
7:15pm – I’m going out on a limb and say that the drug test cost Jonathan Gray the Cubs pick. My guess here is Kris Bryant.
7:18pm – Got that one.
7:20pm – As I understand, the Rockies will go next with Dominic Smith. We’ll see if that chances now that Gray is still available.
7:23pm – well, okay for my predictions. Obviously, the Rockies couldn’t pass on Gray, someone they never thought would be around at #3. All three guys picked so far were predicted to be gone before the Mets pick.
7:28pm – Minny – Kohl Stewart – as predicted…I think the next two picks will be Clint Frazier and Collin Moran and then everything opens up.
7:34pm – Cleveland – Clint Frazier – my guess is Moran and Shipley are 6/7 or 7/6… and it looks like ‘we’ may get a shot at Meadows.
7:42pm - Miami – Collin Moran – smart pick… bad news for Moran.  No surprises yet.
7:49pm – Trey Ball – okay, that’s good for the Austin Meadows fans out there.
7:55pm – Royals – this is where there is supposed to be a surprise… there is… Hunter Dozier… great news for Mets fans… not in the Mets mix.
8:00pm – Pittsburgh – Austin Meadows -  sorry guys.
8:04pm – Toronto – Philip Bickford – the world is an oyster for the Mets…

The Mets picked a high school player.

The R/L splits on Puello are pretty drastic. But hell, the kid's got 15 stolen bases on top of that power. When do they move him to AAA?
