5/16/15

May 16th 2015 -- Mets 14, Brewers 1

After 5 games of famine comes the feast. Saturday night at Citi Field the Mets exploded out of their offensive funk scoring 10 times in the 4th inning. They go on beat the Brewers 14-1 and snap their 5 game losing streak.

Jacob deGrom also snapped out of his recent pitching regression as well as in the bottom of the 2nd the Mets took a 1-0 lead when deGrom, who had 3 hits on the day, hit a single with a drawn in infield scoring Eric Campbell. In the 4th the Mets blew the doors off.  Michael Cuddyer started the 4th off with a single to right.  Daniel Murphy walked. Then after a ground out made it 2nd and 3rd and 1 out Kevin Plawecki grounded into a fielder’s choice scoring Cuddyer and it was 2-0, Plawecki was safe at first.  deGrom then singled to load the bases; that brought up Wilmer Flores batting 9th and he stroked a grand slam over the left field wall and it was 6-0. For Flores his team leading 6th homer on the year and his 2nd grand slam of his career.  Then back to back singles by Curtis Granderson and Juan Lagares and a walk by Lucas Duda loaded the sacks again.  Cuddyer came through with a double to left scoring Granderson and Lagares and it was 8-0.  Brewer’s starter Matt Garza was then replaced by Brandon Kintzler. He yielded a 2 run double to Murphy to make it 10-0.  Campbell then singled to right to make it an 11-0 laugher.

In the 7th the Mets scored 3 more all courtesy of the long ball. Plawecki hit a solo homer, his 2nd homer on the year, to make it 12-1. Granderson launched a 2 run shot (4) and it was 14-1.

The Brewers scored their only run off deGrom in the top of the 6th on a sac-fly by Ryan Braun.  deGrom who went 3 for 3 with a ribbie at bat went 6 innings allowing 5 hits 1 run (earned) while walking 1 and striking out 6.

Erik Goeddel pitched 2 scoreless frames,

Jack Leathersich pitched the 9th. deGrom improves to 4-4. Garza allowed 10 earned runs in 3 1/3 falls to 2-5. The Mets amassed a season high 16 hits on the game. Granderson and deGrom had 3 hits. Flores, Cuddyer and Campbell added 2 hits each.

With the win the Mets improve to 14-4 at home on the season and are now 21-16 on the year keeping a hold on 1st place in the NL east.

Sunday the Mets look to take the series. Noah Syndergaard (0-1 5.06) goes for his first major league win. Wily Peralta (1-4 3.80) goes for Milwaukee.

Did that really just happen?

Well, the only thing that could have been more fun than watching this game was playing in it.

Let the Mets enjoy it.

Don't expect this to happen again tomorrow, but, hopefully, the offensive will return to a level that can win some games.

(looks like the Nats will win tonight also)

Resse called Terry Collins immediately after the game to congratulate him on deciding to bat Boom Boom Flores 9th behind base hit machine Jake deGrom.

The paramedics talked me off the ledge, everybody. I'm all right LOL. Now let's win us a pennant. Harvey tomorrow. I smell a winning streak.

And Dillon Gee pitched good tonight, though Black and Parnell not so good, but at least they pitched.

Tom -

I think we won't see Parnell until around the all-star break, if ever. The velocity is not coming back and, without it, he's not much of a pitcher.

First one back will be Gee who I hope becomes part of the pen as the new 2-inning long man, replacing Erik Goedell in that role and pushing back closer to the back of the pen. In theory alone, a team should have their best 12 pitchers on their staff and Gee would be one of them.

I would return Robles to AAA with a tip of the hat. He has a bright future and plenty of options.

Re: Black - looks like he still needs the rest of May to work out the kinks which is fine - tell him to rub down David's back every night before he goes home
