Minor League Recap - 4-30-15

Q
Minor League Player of The Night - Steve Matz, Matt Oberstw

Honorable Mention - Johnny Monell

AAA - Las Vegas - (13-8) 7 - Reno (9-12) 2

    LHSP Steven Matz -  7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 12 KS, 3-1, 1.84

   C Johnny Monell - 2-5, HR (4), 2 K, 3 RBI, .380

   2B Danny Muno - 2-3, 2 BB, 2R, RBI, .273

   SS  Matt Reynolds - 0-4, BB, 4K, .317

Sheer dominance from Matz, and Vegas woke up to score its 7 runs in its last 3 at bats. 14 more hits in the home win.
AA - Binghamton -

    No games scheduled

A+ - St. Lucie  (11-10) 9 - Bradenton (10-11)  2

    RHSP Marcos Molina -     6.0-IP, 8-H, 2-R, 6-K, 1-BB, 3.27

Mack - these are some real good numbers for a 20-year old pitching at the A+ level... we all wondered if he was going to just be a rookie splash, but he's starting to look like a full time pitching prospect that could be ready in 2018.

    1B Matt Oberste -  3-5, 1-R, HR (2), 6-RBI, .258

    RP Mike Hepple - 1.0-IP, 0-H, 0-R, 0-K, 1-BB, 2.53

Mack - Hepple is a kid they found on the scrap heap. Was not drafted out of East Connecticut State University and played 2013 for four teams in the American Association and Frontier League. He signed with the Mets in March 2014 and pitched last year for Brooklyn (13-appearances, 2-0, 1.93. Could be a rare find.

A - Delmarva (12-8) 7  -  Savannah (7-13) 6

    LHSP Brad Weick -  4.0-IP, 8-H, 4-R, 6-K, 2-BB, 4.74

    LHSP (piggy-start) David Roseboom - 4.0-IP, 1-H, 0-R, 4-K, 0-BB, 0.71

Mack - It's starting to become obvious that Roseboom should be part of the rotation, not Weick... being stretched out.

Guillorme adds 2 more hits, and the SS is now at .318.

Underperformer du Jour - Shane Bay for blowing a 2 run lead in a save opportunity for the Gnats, allowing a 3 run double in the 9th for a come-from-behind win.

Matt Reynolds did not start, but came in early enough to pick up a sombrero. Travis Taijeron gets runner up
goat horns by having a single but also 3 Ks in 4 at bats.

What else can be said about Matz?
He's got a sub 2.00 ERA in the PCL. And this comes after finishing last year almost pitching a no hitter in his teams championship game.

I'm ready to see Matz and Syndergaard in NY. Time to get a real Shortstop. I stated in a post I was on the fence with Flores. I'm now off and he can't stay at SS. I actually do like Flores more than I used to and if we needed a 2nd baseman I would like to see him there but Herrera is looking like a future all-star. Hopefully other teams also like Flores more than they use to for a 2nd base position.
I don't think Herrera is going to give Murphy a chance to get the 2nd base position back.

Richard -

Right now, the Mets do not have a perfect shortstop in their organization. Some hit, others field.

And I can't see why another team would trade to the Metz their quality shortstop for our broken parts.

I agree Mack but they should be looking. Our infield defense, not just SS is looking like it could develop into a major issue. I would rather have a no hit- all glove shortstop at this point.
I think Herrera is going to help with this a little but SS is the real issue.
I think Neise, Colon, and Gee have increased there value and the demand for pitching has increase over the last month. I know the Mets stated Colon is off the table but I don't believe that.

I agree with you Richard. I believe only deGrom and Harvey are off the table.

It's hard for me to talk about Flores. I have written since 2007 that he doesn't have the talent to be a major league shortstop. Now, his offense, or lack of it, doesn't warrant keeping up the experiment.

And Herrera isn't a shortstop either.

Lastly, Reynolds is no defensive gem either.

I just don't know here.

Mack,

Isn't the answer the defensive stability of Ruben Tejada? I honestly believe that Terry Collins would love to write his name in the lineup card -- and I'm not sure he'd be wrong.

I hate myself for typing that, but looking at the options that Sandy has made available.

In 2010 he inherited Jose Reyes at SS and, to date, has not gone outside the organization to find a replacement. It's the "internal solutions" trap. The "patience" trap.

I've always believed that defense should come first with middle infielders. I think shortstops are the top 8 players in baseball with the most errors.

I agree about Tejada. I also would like Tovar.

Mack,

They don't seem to believe in Tovar, and he's not getting the time at SS in AAA -- this year or last year -- so it's difficult for me to think he'd get promoted to the majors and bring stability.

Fortunately, Sandy has Omar Quintanilla on speed dial. That's the sort of "solution" that worries me.

One more thought: I noticed that Tejada was SS for the last 2 Harvey starts, and I don't think it was a coincidence. It goes back to the old-school logic of: If you build around pitching, you have to support that with defense. No point putting Matt out there in a pitcher's dual and not playing solid D behind him.

Sandy's reluctance, inability to make a trade has resulted in a weird logjam of players. They might be able to ride this out, keep Flores & Murphy in the middle, but it doesn't feel like a solution to anything.

A lot of this goes back to the beginning, the idea that the Mets aren't really pursing excellence; they are still just trying to be good and play meaningful games in September, a flawed team that maybe squeezes into the 2nd Wild Card. If that's the goal for this organization -- and I think it is -- then they are still on track.

I don't think trades are made at this time of year. The only internal solution to SS is Ruben Tejada. I guess we'll see Reynolds first; I hope I'm wrong about his glove.

I don't see any trades at this point. First, no one likes trading with Alderson and, second, the Mets have lost most of their depth that would allow for a trade due to the amount of players on the DL.

No, take April for what it was... a nice start for a team that would have been thrilled to be two games above .500 and in second place behind the Nats.

As for Flores, your Harvey-Tejada theory is interesting. Let's wait and see what tonight's lineup is.

Not a theory so much as an observation. I have wondered at what point pitchers might begin to express their preferences (privately, of course).

We've seen personal catchers before. But a personal shortstop would be a new one on me (though perhaps Kevin Mitchell was El Sid's personal SS).

Flores in again at SS. He almost absolutely had to be in there tonight; a vote of "no confidence" could have been devastating.

For his sake, with Harvey on mound, I hope he gets the job done.

The only way we stand a chance at trading for a quality SS is to build a package around Thor or Matz - and it might take DeGrom. In other words, a trade that will be a gut punch to us.

Tom Brennan said...

It is only a stat, but Reynolds has just 1 error in 20 games, all but 3 games at SS.

I like Reynolds. My only worry about him is that his range (again, from stats) is less than Flores.
