2018 Draft - Mets Pick # 9: RHP Bryce Montes de Oca - Missouri

I think Mets 9th rounder Bryce Montes de Oca will be better than 90 percent of the players taken in the 6th-8th rounds. Put him in the pen, let him throw 100+ and enjoy the success. Yes, he has had a lengthy history of injuries, but very good when healthy.

           However, I wonder if Bieser would be more comfortable using Sikkema in a starter’s role if it weren’t for the biggest question mark this team has - Bryce Montes De Oca. Bieser has stated he wants MDO to be the team’s Friday night starter, and again, I understand why. MDO is a big dude who offers a stupid good fastball. The issue is he can’t really get it over the plate with any consistency, as he displayed in that 7-walk performance during his first start. I’ve not been the biggest fan of his mechanics in the past, and I’ve yet to check in on them recently. But clearly, Steve Bieser trusts him.

           There have been a flurry of no-hitters to open the college season, and Missouri added another to the list Friday, using three pitchers to no-hit Maryland-Baltimore County in a 7-1 win.

The no-hitter was the 10th in Mizzou history and the first since Max Scherzer and Michael Cole combined to no-hit Texas Tech in 2005.

Electric 6-foot-7 righthander Bryce Montes De Oca shouldered most of the load, striking out 12 and walking two in his seven hitless frames. With his ace at 98 pitches, Mizzou head Steve Bieser elected to turn to the bullpen, and relievers Giovanni Lopez and Nolan Gromacki finished the job with a hitless inning a piece.

For Montes De Oca, a redshirt sophomore, Friday’s start was easily the best of his career. He set career highs in strikeouts and innings pitched and showed a clear example of how dominant he can be when his stuff is working.
