METS SELECT INF ADEINY HECHAVARRĺA
OPTION INF DOMINIC SMITH
FLUSHING, N.Y., May 3, 2019 – The New York Mets announced today that the club has selected the contract of infielder Adeiny Hechavarría from Syracuse (AAA) of the International League and optioned infielder Dominic Smith to Syracuse. In addition, RHP Drew Smith was transferred to the 60-Day Injured List. Hechavarria will wear #11 and will be available for tonight’s game at Milwaukee.
Hechavarría, 30, who was signed by the Mets to a minor league contract on February 18, has played seven seasons in the majors with the Blue Jays, Marlins, Rays, Pirates and Yankees. According to FanGraphs, his 26 defensive runs saved over the past five seasons (2015-2019) rank sixth among all shortstops.
The 6-0, 195-pounder hit .348 (32-92) with nine doubles, 17 RBI and a .382 OBP in 25 games with Syracuse this season.
Hechavarría hit .254 with 101 doubles, 35 triples, 28 homers and 238 RBI in 811 major league games.
Smith was batting .333 with four RBI in 29 games with New York.

I have my own theory on this one which will be written in my 'Transaction' post later this week.
Regardless of who is in charge, this organization has no clue. Unless Smith did something crazy or is involved in a trade, this makes no sense.
I’m at a total loss....WTF
I disagree with most of you. This move makes a great deal of sense because Smith needs to play and is too young to be merely a pinch hitter. Additionally, Hechavarria can play shortstop and, I think but am not sure, he can plays some outfield where Smith was limited. It's unfortunate because Smith was doing everything they asked of him but he was the odd man out.
Mmmm, Holmer, I think the whole post-sleep apnea mlb pinch-hitting success skyrocketed his value, and BMW is on the nitro-trigger! DM is gaining nothing from slapping around AAA pitchin' anymore.
Met Monkey, With Frazier, Davis, and Cano all able to play first and none of them being able to play short, Smith becomes redundant and Hechavarria is more valuable. Smith doesn't need to prove anything in Syracuse but Hechavarria makes the major league club better today and, yes, Smith is being screwed but the roster numbers are what they are. In a perfect world, which we never live in, Hechavarria replaces Frazier instead of Smith but that is not the business reality here. By the way, thank you for responding respectfully.
Sure thing, Holmer. Anyone think Mets will try to peddle Rosario, if Hechy can stop-gap hit just a bit? He's the superior fielder. At least we'll get an infield look w/o Rosario's sporadic iron shovel at SS.
Maybe, Monkey. Hech is a fine defender, competent offensively, not old.
Look, Todd must go. He grinds the Mets offense to a halt. He is washed up. JD should be starting. Todd's salary is a sink cost. Shame Dom never took games at 3B. And...why is Broxton still here??? Team not hitting, but Rajai Davis on fire. Mets need competent hitters. 2018 was partially RUINED by 20% of the at bats coming from guys who totaled .198. Stop making the same mistake!
'Sunk' cost, auto incorrect!!
I don't think looking to trade Rosario and replace him with Hechevarria is a good idea. I see Tech as a utility guy and a capable backup and/or short term replacement in case of injury. As far as Frazier is concerned the Mets should, but they won't, DFA him like they did TDA. Whether it is a coincidence or not, the offense has been less than stellar since he came of the IL. Davis's AB were much better when he was getting more PT and were better than the Mets are getting with Frazier. The only thing Frazier provides is a better than average glove at 3rd.
Hech, not Tech-auto correct again
