The Mets in a Brodie VW-engineered trade some months back got to move out the somewhat aging Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak, along with prospects Justin Dunn, Gerson Bautista, and Jarred Kelenic.
The Mets got back a very expensive 36 year old Robby Cano and a very inexpensive uber-closer Edwin Diaz and significant cash considerations.

We know how that is looking from the Mets' side - Cano scorched in spring trainng, had a great opening day, then a cold streak and most recently has hit quite well.
Edwin Diaz suffered a loss by making a 2 out mistake to a power hitter on Monday, who took him deep for a HR that cost the Mets the game - he has otherwise been sensational as advertised.
SEATTLE
How is Seattle's side looking (through Monday):
Jay Bruce - JB has 9 homers and 16 RBIs in 87 at bats (pretty good), but is hitting .195 with a .272 OBP (quite bad). Overall, he has been decent.
Anthony Swarzak - injured early, he has returned and relieved in 10 games, earning 3 saves, and has gone 2-0, 2.89 ERA. The Mets could sure use that.
Justin Dunn - the former first rounder has fanned 27 in 18 AA innings and is 1-1, 3.44. Looks more and more like quality there.
Jarred Kelenic - the recent first rounder started in A ball with an ice cold 2 for 25, but since then has hit like Christian Yelich, and is already improved to .329/.427/.573.
It sure looks like both sides got something really good. Time will tell who did better.
Perhaps the Mets should have signed Craig Kimbrel instead, skipped Cano, and had Kelenic and Dunn as two great future pieces.
Because Kelenic is showing hints of being a future superstar, which could swing this in Seattle's favor.

And Kelenic was subsequently 2 for 4 with a homer last night. Torrid. Future All Star.
This trade went bad as soon as Kelenic was included in the deal. Who where the Mets competing against? no one, that's who. So why give up Kelenic?
Another bad trade was the one for Broxton. Why get another CF who can't hit? what's the upside?
On the other side, I thought bringing back Familia was a good idea. But it seems he has lost his gravitas or are still hanging on a coat hanger. I would demote him to the 6th inning, Gsellman 7th and Lugo taking over the 8th.
He needs a good kick in the rear in my opinion.
Yeah, so far, the deal looks like it favors the Mariners by a bit.
Signing Kimbrel would have been a nice move, but we would still have the dead weight of Bruce and Swarzak on the roster (I am not buying their early season success or at least it likely would have been different here).
Kelenic and Dunn OR Diaz is the real measuring stick, IMO.

Viper and Texas Gus, I am with you. We may very well live to regret Kelenic's inclusion when he becomes Yelich II. Broxton can't hit and should be demoted...waiting for what, exactly? Rajai Davis is red hot.
Mike, Swarzak is pitching like Familia, and Familia is pitching like Swarzak.

Probably a crazy idea but I noticed last night knuckleballer Mickey Jannis threw a 2 hitter what the heck worth a try Brodie.
Gary, ya never know on Jannis - but he needs to string a few together. Flexen fanned 11 in 6 innings, but that only adds to the puzzlement for him. Simeon Richardson got hit pretty hard today too, and Szapucki was sucky, so these guys need to get on a roll to be considered for any promotion.
After last night, I may need to rewrite this article.
Yes, Kelenic looks like a future star, but future is always iffy. Remember when the Mets made a trade a few years ago to get the #1 Catching Prospect, who had already been successful at higher levels than Jared? They also got a decent pitching prospect in the deal as throw-in, but the Catcher was the prize. How'd that turn out?
Nothing stopped them from signing Kimbrel, & paying a portion of Bruce's salary to trade him. This is what big market teams do. Do you see the Yankee'S or Dodgers including number 1 draft picks as sweeteners to offload non-performing assests? No you don't. Our yearly conversations always circle back to the fact that Sterling Equities is a dangerously leveraged entity post Madoff, & a functioning league would have removed them from ownership in 2011. We all know why that didn't happen. Since neither Selig or his lackey replacement will ever take that logical step, so you might as well find enjoyment in just the activity of watching baseball, because regardless of who is named GM, their decisions will always be handicapped by montetary considerations.
Trading both Dunn and Kelenic and lashing Cano’s ugly contract to the org through his age 40 season will end up as one of the worst deals in Mets history. There, I said it.
Correct. just to respond to bill Bill Metsiac's post. The Mets didn't trade RA Dickey to discard a non performing asset. They traded a player who they believed had just had a non repeatable career season(and who wanted to be paid on the basis of that season) for 2 top 35 prospects, & high ceiling flyer. The Mets Traded Kelenic because they needed to ditch Bruce's salary, could not afford Kimbrel, & VW needed a closer & appears to love acquiring former clients(Cano). It was indefensible trade, which barring injury to Kelenic, Mets fans will likely curse from now until 2038.
Hey, guys, I hear ya - it always comes back to "not enough money" for this Mets team, doesn't it?
And yes, the Yanks and Dodgers don't do that - Dodger fans were fortunate their prior owner got bumped for one with tons of cash.
