Tony Plate - METS OFFENSE IN A SLUMP

SAFE AT THE "PLATE!" - with Tony Plate

The New York Mets offense has been in a slump during the last two weeks. They have averaged 2.6 runs in their past ten games.

The offense got off to a fantastic start this season. At one point they ranked among the top five in runs scored in all of baseball. During the last two weeks they have seen their production go down rapidly. Things like that can happen to any team so, you have to have patience.

Since April 20, the Mets are hitting .224/.301/.351, and have lost eight of their last 13 games. It is unreal since their offense was carrying the team during the first three weeks of the season.

If the Mets want to keep pace with the teams that are ahead of them, they’re going to need their huge bats to produce immediately.

Fortunately for the Mets the teams ahead of the them have not pulled way out in front since the Mets have been in a scoring slump.

Brandon Nimmo (.171/.277/.195,) and Wilson Ramos (.158/.220/.211,) have been in the toughest slump. When certain players go into a slump their teammates are there to support them by picking them up.

Needless to say, they have each other’s backs. That is why one of Brodie Van Wagenen’s goals this past Winter was to provide the Mets with a deep bench.

The following players are hitting well for the Mets and hopefully their success will spread to the others that are in a slump. Pete Alonso was National League Rookie of the Month for April. He got off to such a good start to begin the season showing his good power.

Robinson Cano who began the season in a slump is slashing .375/.429/.531 over his last 35 plate appearances. Amed Rosario is hitting 282/.317/.436 over his last 41 plate appearances.

Jeff McNeil continues to impress ever since he came to the Mets last year. He has had one of the highest batting averages in the National League thus far. Also, he has delivered a few four-hit games.

Hopefully, the rest of the Mets get it back to together and start hitting on a constant basis. They will need to so they can stay with the rest of the pack and make the playoffs and win the division. I still think the Mets will win the division, because of their strong starting rotation and their bullpen depth.

In other Mets news:

Travis d’ Arnaud signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

And the Mets acquired relief pitcher Wilmer Font from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations or a player to be named later. Jason Vargas is going on the injured list with a left hamstring issue.

Anemic, under-performing, deep-dive offenses are a long Mets tradition. The question is, is this a slump, or early signs of things to come for the next 5 months?

And if it is the latter, when does the sell off begin?
