The Mets will take a day off Thursday before starting a three-game home series
against the Marlins on Friday at 7:10 p.m. on SNY. Michael
Wacha is scheduled to take the mound for New York, while the Marlins are
yet to announce their starter.
Put it in the Books! For my hockey friends, the three stars of tonight’s game..Star number 3, Andres Gimenez..Star number 2, Seth Lugo, and the first star, with his first Mets win, the 150th of his career, Rick Porcello. Brian Joura Mets360.com:
With three starters still out for the Mets, Rojas opted to put out his best
defensive lineup, which included a double play combo of Andres Gimenez and Luis
Guillorme and newly-acquired Billy Hamilton in center field. And the Mets
responded with a strong defensive night. In perhaps a bit of a surprise, the
best defensive play was turned in by 3B J.D. Davis, who made a nice stop and
threw out a runner from his knees.

Metstradamus:
Andres Gimenez at short, Luis Guillorme at second, and Billy Hamilton making
his Mets debut in center (wearing number 21 which looks weird on anybody that
isn’t nearly as big as Lucas Duda,
so … anybody.) I noted that it had to be the best up the middle trio on defense
that the Mets have had in a long time, perhaps since the days of Rey Ordonez,
Edgardo
Alfonzo, and Jay Payton
in center. (But as I was reminded, they put out a pretty good trio in 2005 when
they had Carlos
Beltran in center, Jose Reyes
at short, and the immortal Anderson
Hernandez at second.)

As
we had yesterday on Mack’s Mets: The Mets acquired RHP Ariel Jurado from
the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later and cash
considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Ryan Cordell has
been designated for assignment.
Mets.com: Notes:
Mets acquire Jurado; injury updates. “In sum, the Mets replaced Humphreys
with Jurado, and Cordell with Hamilton. Like Humphreys, Jurado has a history on
prospect lists, ranking third on the Rangers’ Top 30 before the 2017 season.
His stock, however, has since fallen. Jurado posted a 4.59 ERA at Double-A that
season, a 5.93 mark over a dozen Major League outings the following summer and
a 5.81 ERA in a swingman role last year in the Majors.”
SNY.TV:
Mets' Jeff McNeil talks injury, updates when he might return. McNeil missed
Tuesday night's game due to a 'very minor' intercostal strain. "Feeling
good," he said. "I'm unsure of availability. Have to go through all
my pregame stuff, see how it feels, and see where we're at after that."
SNY.TV:
“Mets RHP Marcus Stroman, who is out due to a torn calf, is about to take
perhaps his final step toward a return to the rotation. Marcus
Stroman, who threw a simulated game last week -- which included fielding
his position -- will throw another simulated game on Thursday at the team's
alternate site in Brooklyn, MLB.com's Anthony DiComo reported.”
Mike
Puma NY Post: Jeurys Familia becoming factor in Mets’ bullpen again. “Jeurys
Familia entered Wednesday with a 3.18 ERA in six appearances, which
included escaping a bases-loaded jam created by Paul Sewald
in the fifth inning Tuesday.”

1969: Jim Merritt pitches
the Reds back
into first place in the National League
West with a 3 - 2 win against the Mets.
1970: For the second and last time in his career, Lou Brock steals
home, teaming up with Joe Hague on
a double steal in the 1st inning against the Mets in St. Louis. Nelson Briles wins, 3 - 0, stopping Tom Seaver's
nine-game win streak.
1975: The Mets fire
manager Yogi
Berra, promoting coach Roy McMillan as interim skipper.
1986: The Mets release
outfielder George Foster, the last National League player to hit 50 home
runs in one season. Foster will play 15 games for the White Sox before retiring for good.
2017: The Dodgers complete their first-ever season sweep of the Mets with
an 8 - 0 win on a combined one-hitter by Hyun-Jin Ryu, Tony Cingrani and Kenley Jansen. New York only places two men on
base all day: Travis d'Arnaud who hits a single in the
3rd, and Brandon Nimmo who draws a walk in the
9th. Meanwhile, Cody Bellinger hits his 32nd homer and Justin Turner, who also homers, improves his National League-leading batting average to .349. As the Associated Press puts it: "Los
Angeles crushed the Mets like refuse in a trash compactor, outscoring them
57-15 over seven games and outhomering them 25-11."

As John from Albany often says, great D can win games.
Nice steal by Billy the Blur. He looked like he's still got all his speed.
Everyone on this site seems to forget who was the first person that called for more defense. :)
Those "Baseball Cards like they Oughta Be" are done by Warren Zvon, who in addition to doing great work is a top-notch guy.
If you ever collected baseball cards as a kid, you owe it to yourself to visit his site -- https://metsfantasycards.blogspot.com/
Just be aware that you might end up spending an hour or two checking out all of the terrific stuff he has.
Perry Mason? 😄
Brian. You are so right. Zvon has a great site. He is friends with one of our writers Dave Rubin and is nice enough to let us re-post some of his handiwork here.
