Good Morning.  Happy Birthday Jay Bell, Derek Bell and Mark Vientos. In the Rule 5, Mets get a nice looking Pitching Prospect and trade him to Pittsburgh for Cash, Draft 4 others, lose 5, while the Phillies get Dave Drombroski to run their Team.

NY Post: Mets trade Luis Oviedo to Pirates after taking him in Rule 5 draft. “Oviedo, a 21-year-old Venezuela native, was ranked by MLB.com as Cleveland’s No. 25 prospect. Given his age and inexperience (he pitched at the Class A level in 2019), he’s a better fit for a rebuilding club like Pittsburgh than the Mets, who are hoping to contend in 2021.”

SNY.TV: Mets lose pitching prospect Dedniel Nunez in the Rule 5 Draft. San Francisco Giants…”must carry Nunez on their big league roster for the entire 2021 season or offer him back to the Mets for $50,000…Nunez looks the part of a No. 5 starter/swing man with a fastball that’ll touch 94 mph, an average curve, and slightly below-average changeup.”



I had pegged Wilfred Astudillo as one of the players the Mets might lose as teams are always looking for good catchers. In 2019 Wilfred slashed 267/.323/.408 (.731 OPS) with 37.5% caught stealing in his Mets minor league career.





NY Post: Steve Cohen’s Mets mission got harder with Phillies’ Dave Dombrowski hire. “And just like that, the Mets face another fully loaded foe alongside the two-time defending NL East winners in the Braves and the last full-season champs in the Nationals as well as Derek Jeter’s Marlins, who are coming off their first playoff appearance in 17 years.”

1962

The Red Sox trade Tracy Stallard, Pumpsie Green, and a player to be named later (Al Moran) to the Mets in exchange for Felix Mantilla. Stallard, best known for throwing the pitch to Roger Maris for the record-breaking 61st home run, will become a twenty-game loser for New York in 1964.

1986

The Mets trade Kevin Mitchell, a rookie who played six positions for the eventual world champs, along with prospects Stan Jefferson and Shawn Abner, and two other minor leaguers to the Padres for outfielder Kevin McReynolds, southpaw Gene Walter, and a minor leaguer. After being traded to the Giants during the season, the San Diego native will become the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1989.

 

1987

The A's obtain Jesse Orosco from the Mets and then trades the southpaw reliever along with shortstop Alfredo Griffin and right-hander Jay Howell to the Dodgers for pitchers Matt Young, Bob Welch, and Jack Savage. New York gets Savage as well as right-hand hurlers Wally Whitehurst and Kevin Tapani from Oakland to complete the three-team, eight-player deal.

1987

In a rare trade between the cross-town rivals, the Mets trade Rafael Santana to the Yankees, along with minor leaguer Victor Garcia, who pitched for Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, for Steve Frey, Phil Lombardi, and Darren Reed. The starting shortstop for the world champs last season initially signed with the Bronx Bombers as an amateur free agent in 1976.

 

1991

The Royals deal right-hander Bret Saberhagen and utility player Bill Pecota to the Mets for Gregg Jefferies, Kevin McReynolds, and Keith Miller. The two-time Cy Young Award winner will post only a 3-5 record in his first season with New York, compiling a 29-27 record during his 3+ seasons with the team.

2001

The Mets trade southpaw Billy Traber and outfielders Matt Lawton and Alex Escobar to the Indians for superstar second baseman Roberto Alomar along with prospect Danny Peoples and left-hander Mike Bacsik. The Gold Glove infielder, the centerpiece of the deal, will be a notable bust in Flushing, hitting just .265 and playing uninspired defense for New York before being shipped to the White Sox in the middle of the 2003 season.

Rule 5 has come and gone. Yawn.

Good to see TJ Rivera have a big winter ball game. He has lost so much due to TJS.

Let's sign us some free agents.

TJ Rivera may be the answer to a trivia question: what dude of playing age, who has hit over .300 in over 300 ABs, seems to find it almost impossible to get a major league gig again? That would be TJR, the guy with .304/.335/.445 career stats.

Somehow, Kirk N (.221) had 3 times as many at bats as TJ.

TJ had a hard time coming back from Tommy John the last two years. He did not hit much for the Nationals in AA in 2019. Maybe he can get a minor league deal this Spring and make it back to the bigs in 2021. Hey, Phil Evans had a nice stint to Pittsburgh in 2020 and look at the NL Comeback Player, Daniel Bard...anything can happen.

Bill - Fargas is still with the Mets. He was a minor league free agent again this year and the Mets signed him to the AAA Syracuse Roster. That meant, while he was eligible for the MLB Rule 5 Draft yesterday, he was not eligible for the minor league portion.

Fargas will have a battle in Spring training though with yesterday's Rule 5 Draftee Ferguson and other minor League Free Agent, Mallex Smith just to start at Syracuse. That could mean he will be the CF in AA Binghamton. He led the Eastern League in Steals in 2019. Hopefully that will mean the Mets won't trade any prospects in 2021 for another Billy Hamilton.

Fargas indeed has a steep climb in this organization to reach the big leagues. Gone are the days where a Colin Cowgill could be picked to start.

He is well behind a Matt den Dekker type, who once tore up AAA over part of one season before struggling in the big leagues.

Something needs to be ramped up - I think of McNeil and Rivera adding power, making them more MLB-competitive. Fargas has to figure out what could take him higher. If I were him, I add 20 pounds of muscle and try to boost power, too. Also, he does steal a lot (97 in his last two years) but was caught 39 times. Not a terrible %, but the latter is a high number. He might want to focus on the Beltran model - attempt steals less, be more selective, and up the success %.
