Weekly Draft Notes

 Weekly Draft Notes

 Good morning.

Brian Sakowski and Vinnie Cervino of Perfect Game - These two fine pundits combined for their first mock draft. These were their picks for the Mets in the first two rounds:

10. New York Mets | James Wood, OF, IMG Academy | (2/39) Harry Ford, C, North Cobb

The Mets like to swing big, and they certainly swung for the fences with some high ceiling players in their first two picks. James Wood comes off the board early thanks to his massive frame and huge power upside. Harry Ford is another tooled-up prep standout that has enough athleticism to be an above average defender behind the plate or in the outfield. The Mets have drafted a high schooler in the first round seven times in the past ten years, and we see that trend continuing this year. -Cade Schares

Sakowski's Take: Two of the more intriguing prep prospects on the circuit this summer, Wood at one point looked like he might be the best prep bat in the class before cooling off in the fall, while Ford is one of the most interesting profiles in the class. Wood has something of a class lefthanded-hitting, power-driven right field profile with absurd power projection, while Ford's athleticism, potential both behind the plate and in center field, and feel to hit with power stand out and give him one of the more unique profiles in this class.

12-6-20  -  Baseball Census  @BaseballCensus

Ricky Tiedemann @TiedemannRicky proving why he is one of the best Juco arms in the country at the Future Events Group Juco Prospect Games. FB sitting 91-93/94. Spin on the breaking ball up to 2650

Ian Smith  @FlaSmitty

One of my favorite LHP in the 2021 class and my clear #1 JUCO prospect. FB is ticking up and I still believe the CH could be his best pitch

Joe @JoeDoyleMiLB

It's hard not to really like Ricky Tiedemann. Was 87-90 last September... Then 91-94 in March pre-draft. Slider is one of the higher spin breaking balls in the class. Had a second round grade on him in June for 2020 Draft. Should be a Top 100 guy in 2021

PBR Arizona  @PBRArizona

2021 RHP Austin Puett (@westranch)- Uncommitted, 6-4/205-pounds, XL frame, strong body. Tall athletic delivery, powerful actions with higher effort. Extreme OT slot, long arm action, quick arm.  FB: 87-88, some downhill, cut. CT: 78-79 SL: 70-73

12-4-20  -  Kendall Rogers  @KendallRogers

Great chat with Texas baseball skipper David Pierce. Pierce feels like the Horns offense will be much improved, and RHP Ty Madden was as advertised this fall. Said he did touch 99 at one point, but was more 94-96 and up to 97 with his FB. MIF has a lot of depth as well.

12-5-20 -  Joe @JoeDoyleMiLB

It is really hard not to fall in love with Ian Moller's bat. The Dubuque, Iowa catcher is one of the more polished sticks in the class. From his quiet setup, mechanics, to his approach to the natural loft he produces... Moller is built for the modern game. Really impressive bat.

12-9-20  -  Jonathan Mayo @JonathanMayo

SS Edwin Arroyo, committed to FSU and considered to be the top player from Puerto Rico for the 2021 class, is expected to attend Central Pointe HS in FLA in the spring

12-9-20  -  PBR Texas @PBR_Texas

Congratulations to 2021 RHP AJ Smith-Shawver on his commitment to Texas Tech. A high upside arm that runs the FB into the mid 90s. No. 11 ranked right-handed pitcher in the 2021 class.

12-9-20  -  Ian Smith @FlaSmitty

Georgia LHP Ryan Webb has made massive strides in velocity and vertical break this fall, and will likely be a weekend starter for the Dawgs in 2021. Huge riser on draft boards recently, and likely early round pick in the 2021

12-11-20  -  David Seifert - @DSeifertD1PBR

An overlooked prospect (my fault) for the PBR JUCO Top 100. A blazer (6.4 sixty) and strong defender in the big field. Congrats Kyle Westfall

12-11-20  -  D1Baseball  - @d1baseball

Florida Gators have a power threat at 2B, where Cory Acton looks primed for big things heading into his 3rd season as a regular. @cory_acton22's offensive approach has matured. O’Sullivan said he was “as hot as a firecracker” for the last 3 weeks of the fall.

5YR SR Mat Clark has a strong track record in the ACC for Clemson Baseball. He went 4-0, 1.69 working primarily as a RP in 2018, then broke out as a SP in 2019, going 9-3, 3.21 in 73 IP. Expect Clark & Keyshawn Askew to battle for that 3rd rotation spot.

Hayden Jones (@Mr_Jonesey24) is the total package for a backstop and should go in the top 2-3 rounds of the draft, possibly higher given the premium teams place on well-rounded catchers with a strong arm & offensive upside.

Landon Marceaux, who will get up to 91-93 with his FB at times, had an outstanding fall for LSU. Paul Mainieri said his fastball life was good in the fall, while command of his outstanding changeup was excellent.

That slugger and catcher look like interesting picks. To pick them, we have to keep Allan, Szapucki, Ginn and Wolf to have a real pitching pipeline. Cheap quality pitching keeps payrolls down.

The bats will go early in this draft because they aren't as deep as the RHPs.

My guess is the Mets will lose their 2nd round pick and then turn to pitching, but a catcher is not out of the picture in the early rounds. You can't count on having only one great lower level prospect at that position.

When you seriously lack at a position like catcher, gets awful expensive over time to fix. Drafting real ones is important.
