I’ve been hearing about Elijah Green for a couple of years, and he has loud tools. Power is legit and has the arm strength to stick in right field. I have questions about his ability to hit for contact and pitch recognition.
Too often in showcase games, Green often gave up on hanging breaking pitches or swung wildly at them. However, Green will punish you if a pitcher gets behind in the count and has to throw a fastball. His current profile reminds me of Jorge Soler, a 40-grade contact and batter’s eye grade, but 60+ grade power. It would not surprise me if Green hit .240/.300/.550 with 40 home runs in the majors.

5. Elijah Green, CF, IMG Academy (FL)
Green has the biggest boom-or-bust profile in the class. He has well-above-average power and speed, giving him the kind of ceiling that can be measured in All-Star Game appearances. One scout even said Green has the loudest tools he's ever observed in a player. Unfortunately, evaluators are pessimistic about him reaching his ceiling because of his swing-and-miss tendencies. Indeed, scouts start to sound like Dr. Seuss when they talk about Green's whiffing: he will swing and miss on pitches fast and slow; he will swing and miss on pitches high and low; he will swing and miss all the time; he will swing and miss at this rhyme. To Green's credit, he's attempted to address his contact issues by going strideless in two-strike counts; it just hasn't worked. Green's upside is such that it seems unlikely he'll honor his commitment to the University of Miami (FL); a rough spring could change that, however, as teams are convinced that he has a lower floor than you'd expect from a player ranked this high.

3. Rangers — Elijah Green, OF, IMG Academy, Bradenton, Fla.
Scout’s take: There’s a chance to repeat 2017 where three high schoolers went 1-2-3. The five-tool package is rare, and since Druw Jones is gone, Green is the next five-tooler to grab. Big power profile here in a large 18-year-old frame. He’ll add a little more to the near maxed frame and move to right field with big impact in the middle of a lineup. Dad was an NFL tight end, so it’s not hard to see Elijah preserving athleticism as his body matures. Texas doesn’t have much pitching at the top of its system and Lesko looks like a No. 1 starter, but I think they take the five-tool power guy with future 70 power over the high school righty profile.
Carlos’ take: I could see Green going here purely on talent and upside, but I do think this pick feels more like a previous Rangers’ regime than the current one. It can be tricky to separate the signal from the noise when analyzing draft tendencies based on draft position and how the talent fluctuates year to year, but certainly there has been a shift in philosophy with Texas. That makes me wonder if it would be more interested in a college performing bat here. Still, I am a sucker for tools and upside so I like the pick.
Top 10 Draft Prospects

If Johnson isn't the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, Green might be. There's plenty to like about him, too: Great speed makes him a weapon on the basepaths and a plus defender in the outfield. He also has a plus arm that makes him a center-field prospect. He also has great power at the plate, but his tendency to strike out needs correcting.

The son of former 10-year NFL tight end Eric Green, Elijah has the sort of physicality and athleticism that would pop on a football field—and is almost unheard of on a baseball field. A 6-foot-3, 214-pound outfielder, Green has tremendous strength and power with a physique that would look perfectly normal next to the best sluggers in the big leagues today. He’s not a slow-moving slugger either, as he has posted 70-grade run times and as one scout remarked, “Guys that big and that strong aren’t supposed to be running 6.5 in the 60.” Given his toolset, a case could be made that Green has the best pure upside in the class. He has shown exceptional power at his best and went on a home run binge with USA Baseball’s 18U National team in the fall of 2021, homering four times in just seven games. Green does have some swing-and-miss questions and scouts have wondered about his ability to drive both quality fastballs and secondary pitches. He struggled against velocity over the showcase circuit in 2021 and scouts who’ve seen him with IMG Academy noted his whiffs against secondaries last spring as well. Because of that, some scouts think he’ll be more of a power-over-hit bat. He has the speed to stick in center field but it’s rare to see someone of his size there in the big leagues and he’ll need to clean up his route-running and instincts to stick there long term. His plus arm strength will allow him to move to right if necessary, where he would be an above-average defender.

Green might single-handedly be the most famous prep player on the planet for the last 24 or so months, but when your profile starts with present 70 grade run and raw power tools, it makes sense.
The NFL bloodlines make complete sense for Elijah Green who stands with an extremely physical 6’3”, 225lb. frame that resembles a prime Calvin Johnson more than anything else, and somehow still shows some projection.
A veteran on the showcase circuit, the Miami commit flexed his big-time juice throughout this past summer hitting more home runs than anyone (5) across Perfect Game events and slugged north of .600 against quality competition, plus leading U18 USA Baseball in every power category. Hit tool overall is still a main topic of discussion going into this spring due to still expanding out of the zone frequently leading to higher whiff numbers. That being said, Green presents an extremely short swing that uses minimal load and creates a ton of impact and lift off the barrel, and very rarely misses a mistake in the zone.
There’s clear superstar potential in the bat when he puts it together, and a strong spring for powerhouse IMG academy will only solidify his potential as a top 5 pick in July.

One of the most exciting players in the country, Green is a do-it-all, powder-keg package of explosivity and bottled energy on the diamond. Already 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, he’s a physical specimen built different than his peers. Simply put, there’s not much Green cannot do. Some evaluators believe he could be a plus hitter with plus-plus raw power, and he’s already tapping into that juice in-game. He’s currently at least a 70-runner with a 70-arm as well. There's definitely some swing and miss in his game, so that’ll be the one thing scouts are keeping an eye on. There aren’t too many warts in his game. Green is a very special talent, some calling him a generational player, that teams will undoubtedly covet at the top of the draft.

2. Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks and Scouting Director Deric Ladnier have not been shy with selecting high-upside preps in recent years and we believe that trend continues here with Green. Whether it be Corbin Carroll, Matt McLain, Blake Walston or Jordan Lawlar, Arizona has a type. They’re seeking stars and building a robust talent pool for the future. There may not be a higher ceiling than Green in this entire class. Yes, there’s some swing-and-miss, but if we’re ultimately talking about a guy who plays centerfield and hits .240 with 40 homers, you’re okay with that tradeoff. Termarr Johnson makes a ton of sense here too, as do some of the elite college performers like Brooks Lee and Jace Jung. With Arizona still a few years from competing, we think they once again jump at long-term superstar upside and go with a high school bat.

No. 3 on the list is Elijah Green, whom we touted 13 months ago in this space and whom Baseball America rates as the No. 2 overall high school prospect. You might recall that the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Green already has a Pittsburgh connection as his father, Eric, played tight end for the Steelers from 1990 through 1994 and was an All-Pro selection the last two years.
The right-handed hitting outfielder has shown plus raw power, but he’s also shown a propensity to swing and miss. However, given the way the game is today, it’s unlikely his swing-and-miss trouble will be held against him, particularly considering his other tools. MLB calls him an “elite-level runner” who should cover plenty of ground – and steal some bags – and rates his arm as plus as well.

No player in this Draft has a higher ceiling than Green, who would have been a top-10 choice in 2021 if rumors that he might reclassify had proven true. He has well above-average raw power and speed and he's a quality center fielder with a strong arm, but some swing-and-miss issues give teams a bit of pause.

I get the Termarr love, and I'm not knocking Druw Jones' potential. Delauter is a beast, so I get that too.
But for my money, Elijah Green is still *that* guy. The ball comes off his bat in a special way. My biggest worry is always reading spin, and I don't think that's an issue

I’m sure most of you are aware of Green’s one potential flaw. He strikes out. It’s important to note that not all strikeouts are equal. I’d be interested to see what Green’s chase rates are because outside of some mild chasing of breaking balls down in the zone I haven’t seen him expand the zone excessively during the broadcasts/streams I’ve watched. He’s not as patient as someone like Termarr Johnson, but Green has an actual approach and is willing to take a walk. Green also didn’t swing and miss at an absurd rate at Perfect Game events. If he was chasing and whiffing at absurd levels, I’d be more concerned with the strikeout totals, but I think there’s a good chance the strikeouts end up being manageable. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see Green compete at WWBA in Jupiter this October which would have been a nice, final sample of games before the spring. Green plays at high school powerhouse IMG Academy in Florida which means he’ll still face some quality arms in 2022. This should give scouts and evaluators in Florida some useful live looks to add to the scouting report. Barring injury or some other freak occurrence, Green will remain a 1-1 draft candidate and it’s unlikely he lasts past pick #10.

There’s a strong chance that Elijah Green could be the #1 prospect in baseball by this time. I’d even say that he possesses the highest upside of any prospect on this list. Green is one of the favorites to go #1 in the 2022 MLB draft and it’s easy to see why. Green’s tools are off the charts. In fact, his tools broke the damn charts. Across the board, you’ll see 60 or 70 grades with 70’s on both his power and speed. If that isn’t enough to make your mouth water, some scouts envision a plus hit tool in time too if some improvements are made with his pitch recognition.

Much like 2020’s top pick Spencer Torkelson, Elijah Green has been the consensus number one pick in 2022 for quite some time now. Green is the sort of player scouts drool over. At 6’3″, 215 pounds, he already has a major league body. Think Barry Bonds swing with Ronald Acuna Jr.’s defense and speed. Plus-plus raw power, hit-ability is there. 70-arm with 70-run too. Come on! He’s about to become a star.

Elijah Green sounds like a true stud - we can only hope that his K rate stays on the high side and he slips to # 11.
Two K-prone "athlete types" in the Mets minors that I wrote a lot about the past few years are 0 for 6 with 4 Ks and a walk this spring. You have to make contact.
Alex Ramirez - I wonder if he will be another Elijah Green, but with somewhat less physical skills but a better contact rate. The just-turned-19 year old is 1 for 3 and a walk this spring.
Wyatt Young, Ramirez and Jake Mangum have hit well in limited ABs this spring, while the rest of the minor leaguers have been pretty dreadful collectively.
Pillar/Villar are 3 for 31 this spring - perhaps dumped at the right time?
Hopefully, Max is OK - this team without both him and Jake for any length of time looks a lot like 2021 to me again.
He isn't having a great season but the raw talent is equal to Druw Jones.
Ramirez had a remarkable 2021 as an 18 year old in Low A.
He may be a hall of famer some day, but I'm not a fan of this high power ceiling, high K profile player. If he were to drop to 11, I'd probably still pass
