B-Mets: Game Notes

LAST GAME:

Facing one of the top pitching prospects in all of
minor league baseball in Madison Bumgarner, the B-Mets
held their own with a 1-0 lead until Bumgarner surprised the
2,612 in attendance with a grand slam off Binghamton starter
Eric Niesen to put Connecticut on top for good in their 9-3 win
over the B-Mets. In addition to his offensive exploits, Bumgarner
tossed seven innings of one-run work for his seventh AA
win. After getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth,
Niesen was not as fortunate in the fifth when Bumgarner
brought in four runs with his opposite-field homer followed by
a Ramon Castro two-run double. Niesen was charged with six
runs in five innings and took his fifth loss as result. Ruben
Tejada roped his third homer of the season with a solo shot of
Bumgarner in the fourth, one of two hits for the 19-year old
shortstop. The B-Mets added two runs in the ninth on a tworun
double from Josh Thole. Lucas Duda’s 19-game hitting
streak came to an end with an 0-3 showing and Emmanuel
Garcia went 0-3 to end his 24-game home on-base streak.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

RHP Brad Holt, the reigning
Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, will look for his third
straight win when he takes the hill for tonight’s start. Holt won
his last outing July 18 over Erie with 6.2 innings allowing two
runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. He is 2-3 with a 5.02
ERA in 28.2 innings. Holt is considered the fourth-best prospect
in the Mets’ organization by Baseball America and is
considered the top starting pitching prospect among righthanders.
He opened the season with St. Lucie (High-A) and
went 4-1 with a 3.05 ERA in 41.1 innings in eight starts. Holt
was the Mets’ first-round supplemental pick in 2008, 33rd
overall, out of UNC-Wilmington.

RHP Tim Alderson will make his 13th AA start tonight for the
Defenders. He won his last start despite allowing five runs in
five innings at New Hampshire July 17. Alderson is 6-1 with a
3.29 ERA in 65.2 innings. Tonight will be his third start against
the B-Mets. He is 1-0 with a 3.18 in 11.1 innings and has
allowed 16 hits and has struck out nine men without a walk.
Last season, Alderson went 13-4 with a 2.79 ERA in 145.1
innings with San Jose (High-A). His ERA led the California
League and was named the Class A Advanced Starting Pitcher
of the Year by MILB.com. He is considered the fourth-best
prospect in the Giants organization by Baseball America. The
20-year old righty was the 22nd overall pick in the 2007 draft.
