Cyclones 2, Doubledays 1
The Cyclones (21-9) shut down the Doubledays on Sunday in a 2-1 win that continues the best start in franchise history. The previous club best was a 20-10 start in 2001.Southpaw Darin Gorski (1-1) was dominant in earning his first win of the season. Gorski (pictured, by George Napolitano) was the Mets' seventh round pick of the 2009 June draft. On Sunday, he tossed 6.0 two-hit innings, allowing just one run, while striking out four. He was relieved by RHP Wes Wrenn, who threw 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and notching two strikeouts. RHP Mike Powers closed the door for the Cyclones, pitching a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the season.On the offensive side, the night belonged to LF Nick Santomauro, who went 3-for-3 with two singles and his first home run of the season. SS Robbie Shields had two hits Sunday night; including a triple off the left field wall in the eighth inning. The win marks the 12th one-run game the Cyclones have played in this season, going 8-4 in those contests. Following the game, the Cyclones head to Vermont for a three-game series with the Lake Monsters, before returning to KeySpan Park on Thursday, July 23rd to take on the rival Staten Island Yankees. The first 2,500 fans in attendance receive a free lunch box, courtesy of Verizon. In addition, the Cyclones will be honoring New York's Finest on NYPD night, presented by Municipal Credit Union.
