In the five games since the Eastern League All-Star break, the Binghamton Mets offense is showing more life than it has all season. That was never more apparent than Monday night, when the B-Mets romped to an 11-5 victory over the Connecticut Defenders in the opener of a four-game series at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets (36-58) have won three of five games since the last week's All-Star break and five of their last seven. "After those two days (off) for our All-Star Break, I see a lot of energy out there," B-Mets manager Mako Oliveras said. "Maybe they were tired. A lot of these kids never had to play so many games in a row. I can see we're getting good at-bats, better approaches at the plate. Sometimes, you get mentally tired and it's hard to produce."

Jeurys Familia became the first Sand Gnat to strike out more than 10 batters in just under three years as he fanned 11 in the Sand Gnats, 8-0, win Monday night at Grayson Stadium. The 19-year-old Familia (8-6) picks up the win and is the first Sand Gnat to win eight games in 2009.
The Santo Domingo, D.R. product retired 13 Crawdads batters between the second and sixth innings and did not allow a hit through the middle four innings. Familia’s seven innings pitched tie a season high for the youngster, which he set back on May 26 in Lexington.
Amidst the stellar pitching from Familia was an inside-the-park home run off the bat of Wilmer Flores that went off the head of Crawdads centerfielder David Paisano.
Savannah sent eight men to the plate in the first inning for the second straight game and scored three runs to hold a lead they’d never relinquish. Reyes walked to start the inning followed by a Jefry Marte single to start the inning. After Jordan Abruzzo popped out and Flores reached on a fielder’s choice, Sean Ratliff hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the first run. Josh Satin followed two batters later with a two-RBI single to make it, 3-0.
The Gnats added a run in the second and third innings before the unorthodox round tripper by Flores in the sixth. Kai Gronauer added his fifth home run of the season in the eighth with a two-run shot to put the Gnats up by eight. Manny Olivares and Phillips Orta each worked an inning to help preserve the eighth shutout of the year for the Gnats.
With their two scoreless innings of work, the Gnats bullpen went through the entire home stand without allowing a run (23 IP).

Additionally, if I told you that my friends bought a used pool skimmer for $40 at midnight last night, you might think that they were being foolish, but if you found out that their son had a pool party at 11:00 AM and their pool was filled with leaves, you would probably change your mind. The gravity of the situation matters. Similarly, if I told you that instead of letting Tom Glavine pitch the last day of the 2007 baseball season against the Marlins, the Mets were somehow able to pay Johan Santana to join the staff on that fateful Sunday and pitch them to victory instead, you might value that more than 1/162nd of his contract value. That game was definitely going to make or break their season (or at least send them into a one-game playoff), since they were tied with the Phillies on the last day of the season for the division lead, and that game was definitely pivotal.

Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel received votes of confidence from chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon two weeks ago, the GM said Monday night, after joining the Mets in Washington to watch a 6-2 victory against the Nationals.
Still, sources have indicated to the Daily News that Wilpon's view of Minaya clearly has shifted. A source recently told The News that Minaya's three-year extension, which runs through 2012 and is believed to be annually worth $1.1 million, would not be an impediment to jettisoning the GM after the season.
Minaya said that in the conversation with Wilpon, the Mets' COO said, "'I want you to be our general manager. I want Jerry to be our manager.' That type of stuff. That was said a couple of weeks ago to me and to Jerry.

Squandered fortunes? Indeed, much about the Mets' season can be defined by big, staggering dollar figures that suggest massive losses:
-- $136 million: The team's 2009 Opening Day payroll, tops in the NL and second to the Yankees in all of baseball. As things stand, at 43-48 after Sunday night's loss in Atlanta, the Mets are the most expensive fourth-place team in history. On Saturday, when the Mets won and the Phillies were rained out, it marked the first time since July 2 that the Mets gained ground on the NL East lead -- and they were still eight games back entering Sunday.
-- $58.35 million: The amount of talent the Mets have withering on the disabled list, including core players Carlos Beltrán ($18 million salary this season), Carlos Delgado ($16 million), Billy Wagner ($10.5 million), José Reyes ($5.75 million), J.J. Putz ($5 million) and John Maine ($2.6 million). Even 20-year-old Fernando Martinez, the Mets' best young player, is out another two months following knee surgery.
-- $6 million: The total amount owed to Manager Jerry Manuel and General Manager Omar Minaya under the terms of the contract extensions they signed last winter, making it unpalatable for the Wilpons to fire either of them.
