1. Was it just a coincidence that there was an All-American Rejects concert Saturday night after the Mets game?
2. I don’t know very much about Jairo Castillo, other than the fact that he is 20-years old and plays 3B for the VSL Mets. That being said, we may want to keep an eye on him, not because of his current bating average (.204 through Friday night), but the fact that he hit his 8th home run on Saturday. Two-thirds of his hits this year have either been doubles or yard-balls and there just ain’t that many home run dudes in the VSL. Oh yeah… did I tell you he has 70-Ks (league leader) in 152-Abs.
3. The GCL Mets have suspended P Jimber Mueses. The 22-yr. old was 0-1, 10.13, in four appearances, 0-K, 5-1-IP. 6-ER, 5-BB this year. Other moves: Shawn Bowman to the DL… Evan LeBlanc to Brooklyn… Rafael Fernandez to Savannah
4. Another of the GCL Mets that’s off to a great start is 3b Charlie Hinojosa. Hinojosa was a 39th round draft pick, in 2008, directly out of high school. He played sporadically for the GCL Mets last year, getting 53 at bats and hitting .226. This year, he’s a starter and putting up numbers of .405/.444/.500/.944.
5. Boy, I can’t see how the Mets won’t bring up SP Jonathan Niese after Saturday’s outing. That’s 4-ERs in his last 51.1-IP. 0.96 ERA in last 56.1-IP… It sure looks like it’s time.
6. Do you think Brian Stokes texted Billy Wagner after striking out the third out in the 8th inning with bases loaded today?
7. Scott Moviel pitched for Lucy Saturday night and had a control problem… but more than that, he really didn’t like some dude named Robinson Chirinos. Moviel hit him. Three times. Actually, he threw 5 HBPs… guess who won?
8. Good night for most of the prospects, especially the SPs. The tough part is after you’ve been bumped up. That’s the test of prospect talent and you begin to weed out the flash in the pans. Jhonathan Torrez and Gonzalez Germen had a rough first outing last week, so we’ll follow them closely. Only first time test tonight came out of the pen and Bobby Gagg struck out three in one inning.
9. We’re taking baby steps around the Mets. No one really knows what direction they are going, and winning tonight in Atlanta actually doesn’t help define it either. My guess on the next move is the dumping of Redding, which especially seems evident with Fernando Nieve getting another start. Me? I’d dump Redding and Livan, and call up Figgy and Niese…. But what the hell do I know?
10. Later today… we’ll update the draft list and do the report card on the SPs. Mack out.
