Chris Snyder, Starting Pitchers, Escobar & Igarashi, Richard Lewis... and, Ya Know What's Amazin?

Chris Snyder:

Plus, I was told that the Mets have recently re-engaged with Arizona about acquiring Chris Snyder. The Mets did figure out to stop offering up Luis Castillo in a dubious contract for dubious contract deal because the Diamondbacks were not obtaining Castillo under any circumstances. But what surprised Arizona officials was that the Mets essentially said the Diamondbacks had to eat the entirety of Snyder’s $4.75 million contract for 2010. Snyder has been working out regularly at the Diamondbacks’ facility and they feel he has managed his back problems and will be a full player this year. Thus, with starting catchers always in demand they are not in give-away mode with Snyder. - link

Starting pitchers

We've got Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, John Maine, and Oliver Perez all as locks for the rotation. Whatever you think of them -- the latter two in particular -- this is what one-through-four will look like so long as unforeseen (or perhaps entirely foreseen) injuries don't step in and derail that plan. Santana is a year older and missed the last month of the 2009 season following arthroscropic surgery on his throwing elbow, but barring a precipitous decline he should still be very good. Mike Pelfrey's ERA blew up last year but his xFIP was basically unchanged, and with some better luck on his flyballs -- specifically, them not turning into homeruns -- he should put up 2008-like numbers. I like John Maine but I'm not bullish on his outlook for this year or subsequent years. He'll be good if his arm doesn't fall off, but that's a big 'if'. Oliver Perez is kaljskljdaflsd.f.......... *blerp*.  -  link

 Kelvim Escobar and Ryota Igarashi

Would you have signed Escobar to 1-year, $1.25M deal, and Ryota Igarashi to a 1/$3M deal, or given a 1-year deal to one or more of the following instead: Matt Capps ($3.5M), Clay Condrey ($900K), Octavio Dotel ($3.5M), Brendan Donnelly ($1M), Kevin Gregg ($2.75M), Bob Howry ($2.25M), Takashi Saito ($3.2M), David Weathers ($?) ? Or, would you have brought back JJ Putz at $3M? - link

Richard Lucas:

3B (2009 – Power 79; First Base Rate 76; Discipline 60; Speed 33) - The Mets selected Lucas with their 4th round pick in the 2007 draft. They were high enough on him to start the 2008 season as an 19yo in the SAL, but his stock tumbled after a disappointing 2008 season. In 2009, the Mets hit the ‘reset’ button on his development process, having him begin in the GCL, moving to the APY, before finishing with a brief appearance in the NYP. The results were considerably different this time around as he posted a .948 OPS between the three stops, finishing with the #7 Performance score in the APY. While not a huge ceiling type, Lucas does show above average power potential and contact skills, with average plate discipline. More importantly he is a capable defensive player at third base. Lucas will make a return visit to the SAL in 2010, and we expect completely different results this time around. - link

Ya Know What's Amazin?

1. Is it my imagination, or is every other Mets writer slamming the team as hard as they can so they can some day tell their readers, "I said it first"...

2. What happens if the Mets make the playoffs with this team? Do they admit their errors?

3. This team:  one of the best young first basemen, a .300 hitter at second, perennial all-stars at SS, 3B, LF, CF...  the best prospect ever to come out of Georgia in RF, two excellent pitcher controllers behind the plate, the best pitcher in baseball, and the best relief staff in baseball...  am I crazy, or isn't this a team to be proud of?

4. Is it my imagination that, with everyone all going "3-Up", "6-packs", 5-at-a-time", everyone is trying to look like Mack's Mets?

5. Is it true that the MVP of the Carribean League, Nelson Figueroa, isn't signed to a 2010 contract?

6. Is Tony B's ears ringing as Teddy Dzuiba and Shane Hawk put the finishing touches to their Q&A?

7. Is the Mookie move kewl or what?

8. Can we look for more of this in Savannah this year?

9. What about someone starting a Facebook page, called: "Tim Teufel for 2011 Mets Manager"?

10. Is that all that's troubling yu, bunkie? (dating myself...)
