BINGHAMTON METS 2010 GAME NOTES

LAST GAME: Despite committing a season-worst three errors, the B-Mets won their third straight game with a 7-5 victory over Portland at Hadlock Field Monday night. The win vaulted Binghamton into a first-place tie with New Hampshire, which lost last night at Reading. Starter Brad Holt recorded his best outing to date in 2010 with four innings of work in which he allowed an unearned run and struck out a season-best five. The offense was propelled by Jose Coronado, who had two hits, including a go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth, and drove in three runs. Kirk Nieuwenhuis also produced a two-hit day with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Roy Merritt offered stability out of the bullpen with 2.2 scoreless innings before
Jose De La Torre hurled a shutout ninth for his second save in as many days. Carlos Guzman had the only three-hit day for Binghamton with three singles.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Scott Shaw is due for his seventh start of the year tonight. In his last start, He threw 5.1 innings and allowed four runs at Erie May 6 for a no-decision. Shaw is 4-0 with a 7.06 ERA in 29.1 innings this year. He led St. Lucie (High-A) last season in numerous categories, including
starts (26), innings (149.2), wins (8) and strikeouts (118). The righty was drafted by the Mets in the 13th round of the June 2008 draft out of the University of Illinois.

RHP Stephen Fife is will take the ball for the Sea Dogs in his sixth start of the season and first against Binghamton. He was roughed up for a season-high five runs on eight hits in four innings his last start May 6 versus Reading. On the year, he is 1-1 with a 4.07 ERA in 24.1 innings. Made 18 starts between Greenville (Low-A) and Salem (High-A) last season and went 3-5 with a 3.71 ERA over 87.1 innings combined. Fife was Boston’s fourth-round pick in the June 2008 draft out of the University  of Utah.

LUTZ LEAVES THE YARD: B-Mets third baseman Zach Lutz jacked his eighth homer of the season Monday night, a solo job over the Maine Monster in left. He leads the league in homers and is averaging a home run every 13.13 at-bats, the best ratio in the league.

CORONADO MAKES IT COUNT: Jose Coronado has made his hits count against the Sea Dogs. He has just four hits against Portland, but three of them have driven in runs, including a grand slam homer April 20, an RBI single in the second inning last night and a game-changing, two-run double in the sixth, also from last night. He is hitting .174 (4-23) versus the Sea Dogs in six games with seven RBI. The Venezuelan-born middle infielder is in his fourth year with the B-Mets and has already tied a career-high with three homers.
