LAST GAME: The B-Mets resumed a suspended game from Monday, and went on to beat the Altoona Curve, 4-2 on Tuesday night. The Curve took an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back RBI groundouts in the third inning, but Binghamton scored the final four runs of the game. Blake Forysthestarted the scoring with a solo shot, and Danny Muno singled up the middle to tie the game in the fifth. In the sixth, Binghamton took the lead whenRhyne Hughes took a bases-loaded walk. Muno followed with another walk, giving the B-Mets a 4-2 lead. Darin Gorski threw 5.0 innings to pick up the win, and Jeff Walters earned the save with a perfect ninth.
BINGHAMTON PITCHER: RHP Cory Mazzoni starts his 11th game of the season for the B-Mets, and his second against Altoona. On May 30thhe was given a no-decision after throwing 6.0 innings and allowing four runs. He was won each of his last two starts, and has won four of his last five decisions. On June 28th vs. Trenton, he struck out 10 batters in six innings and picked up the win. In six starts at home in 2013, Mazzoni is 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA. He finished June with a 3.65 ERA in 24.2 innings. In 55.2 innings, he has struck out 64 batters.
ALTOONA PITCHER: RHP David Bromberg pitches in his 17th game for the curve, and his 12th as a starter. He threw against Binghamton on June 7th, and got the loss after allowing three runs in six innings. He has eight losses this year, but has a 3.29 ERA. He has allowed more than four runs only once this season, and has held batters to a .260 batting average against. He was drafted by the Twins in the 32nd round of the 2005 draft out of Santa Ana College (CA) and signed with the Pirates before the 2013 season.
SEARCHING FOR A SWEEP: A win on Wednesday would give the B-Mets their 11th consecutive series win. It would also be their fourth sweep of the season. The B-Mets swept the Curve in a three-game series in Altoona June 7-9. Binghamton has won every series since splitting a four-game series at New Britain May 20-23, and they have not lost a series since May 6-8 at Trenton.
22 OVER .500: Binghamton currently has the best record in the Eastern League. They are 51-29, and are 22 games over .500 since August 11, 2004 (70-48). If Binghamton wins on Monday, they will be 23 games over .500 for the first time since 8/10/04. That was the best record Binghamton had in that season.
AGAINST ALTOONA: The B-Mets are 6-1 in their first seven games against the Curve this season. After today, they are scheduled for seven more games against Altoona, and four of them at NYSEG Stadium.
WINNING WITH FEW HITS: Binghamton is 5-1 in their last six games, and they have not tallied more than seven hits in any of these games. During the stretch, the B-Mets are outscoring their opponents, 25-16.
SOLID DEFENSE: The B-Mets have made 64 errors this season, which is four fewer than any other team in the league. They are tied with Altoona and Erie for the top fielding percentage (.978).
TURNING POINT IN THE SEASON: On May 12th, Binghamton was 18-18 after the first game of a doubleheader against the Harrisburg Senators, and were 4.0 games out of first place. Since then, the B-Mets have gone 33-11, and lead the division by 8.5 games.
21ST SAVE FOR WALTERS: B-Met closer Jeff Walters recorded his 21st save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning on Tuesday. That was the third straight game Walters has recorded a save. Tuesday’s save moved him into fifth place in Binghamton history for saves in a single season. The franchise record for saves in a season is 28 by Jerad Riggan in 2000.
