Savannah, GA – The Greenville Drive edged the Savannah Sand Gnats 1-0 on Labor Day Monday at Historic Grayson Stadium in the final game of the 2013 regular season. Savannah scored one run in the final 18 innings of regular season action.
The First Half Champion Gnats open the Southern Division Championship series on Wednesday, September 4 in Augusta against the Second Half Champion Augusta reenJackets.
The Drive (29-40/51-87) scored the game’s only run in the second inning Monday. With one out, Savannah starter Marcos Camarena plunked Keaton Briscoe, who advanced to third on Boss Moanaroa’s single into right. Catcher Leonel Escobar then grounded to first, where Brian Harrison stepped on the bag, but could not throw to second in time to nab Moanaroa, allowing Briscoe to score.
Camarena finished six innings with six strikeouts, allowing just one run. Greenville starter Sergio Gomez threw six shutout innings to earn his first SAL win for the Drive.
The Gnats (34-35/77-61) had baserunners in the second, fifth, sixth, and ninth innings but could not punch across a run after going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. All three Savannah hits were singles.
The Southern Division Championship series will shift to Savannah for game two on Friday, September 6. Game three, if necessary, in the best-of-three first round will be Saturday, September 7.
Playoffs The Gnats begin the playoffs on Wednesday, September 4, at the home of the Augusta GreenJackets, the Second Half Southern Division Champion.
