Greenville 2 - Savannah 1
Savannah, GA – The Greenville Drive snapped the Savannah Sand Gnats’ five game winning streak with a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats and Drive finish the 2013 regular season with a noon start on Labor Day Monday.
The Drive (28-40/50-87) scored their only two runs in the third for a 2-0 lead. With a runner at first and one out, Savannah starter Seth Lugo briefly lost home plate, issuing three straight walks to force home the first run. Mario Martinez then lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to put Greenville in front 2-0. Lugo did not allow another runner, retiring the final 11 batters he faced to finish six innings. He struck out eight and walked three while allowing two runs on two hits.
The Gnats (34-34/77-60) got a run back in the sixth inning. CF Brandon Nimmo singled into centerfield to start the inning. After he stole second base and went to third on a throwing error, Nimmo scored on 1B Cole Frenzel’s linedrive single into center to bring the Gnats within one.
Nimmo finished 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch. Frenzel was 3-for-4 with a double.
Savannah’s ninth inning rally came up short as the Gnats left the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at first.
