Spending the most money guarantees nothing. Penny-pinching guarantees losing.

The key is being smart about filling out as many positions with under-market talent (paid less than they're worth) and being willing to tap into your resources to go the extra mile to round out a roster.

I haven't been as upset at the lack of spending as some as there haven't been enough talented players out there who truly deserved their contracts and will be clogging up scarce payroll room soon enough - our own Granderson will be this in short order.

I don't need shiny FA toys, I need a willingness to bring in run producers even if they're not *cheap* and I need our homegrown core players extended.

Oh, and one more multi-million dollar slugger to put in the middle of the lineup.

PS - One thing that Omar did that infuriated me was that he would look at deficiencies and then just spend on the best he could get that was available. That's how we would up with Oliver Perez re-signing, Luis Castillo, Moises Alou, and Jason Bay among others. Sandy hasn't been perfect but he's shown more restraint.

Some might say too much restraint (except for the inexplicable Chris Young contract).

Michael,

When the Mets signed Bay, everyone was happy. They were mostly happy because we didn't have to dish out the contract that the Cardinals did for Holliday. Well in hind sight, it couldn't have worked out worse as Bay was awful and Holliday has lived up to his contract.
