5/1/15

May 1, 2015 -- Mets 4, Nationals 0

Daniel Murphy’s 8 inning 3 run double broke open a tight game. The Mets behind Matt Harvey blank the Nationals Friday night 4-0.

As advertised this was a pitcher’s duel between Harvey and Max Scherzer.  Both pitchers had thrown zeros on the board until the bottom of the 4th when Michael Cuddyer took a Scherzer offering over the 380 mark in the new right field power alley for a 1-0 lead, for Cuddyer his 3rd homer on the year.

Offensively that was it until the bottom of the 8th inning.  In the 8th, Juan Lagares and Lucas Duda singled.  Cuddyer walked, and then Murphy lined one over Jason Werth’s head in left scoring all three runners giving the Mets some breathing room.

Harvey who didn’t have control of his fastball worked through it going 7 innings allowing just 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3.  Alex Torres started the 8th but with 1 out, Terry Collins brought in Jeurrys Familia.  Familia then notched the 5 out save, his 10th on the year and 10th in a row. Scherzer went 7 allowing 5 hits the 1 run (earned) he walked 1 and struck out 10.  He takes the hard luck loss falling to 1-3.

Matt Harvey improves to 5-0 and now leads the Majors in wins. His era falls to 2.41.  Offensively the Mets had 8 hits with 2 apiece by Lagares and Murphy. With the win the Mets snap their 3 game losing streak.  The Mets are now 16-8 on the year and 11-1 at Citi Field. Saturday night it’s game 3 of the series. Jonathon Niese (2-1  2.74) goes for the Mets, fellow southpaw Gio Gonzalez (1-2  5.01) goes for Washington
