5/3/15

May 3rd 2015 -- Nationals 1, Mets 0

Sunday afternoon at Citi Field the Met offense continued to sputter as the Nats score 1 run in the top of the first inning and it holds up as they blank Mets 1-0 for the second straight day.

The Met pitching is living up to expectations even if the hitting isn’t. Dillon Gee started and while he wasn’t as sharp as his previous outing he held the Nats down. In top of the first the Nats scored their only run. Denard Span walked and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice.  Then a broken bat dunker to right field by Ryan Zimmerman brought home Span with the game’s only run.  Gee did pitch in an out of trouble all game long.

In the 5th the Nats had 1st and 3rd and no outs and Gee struck out Jayson Werth, got Bryce Harper to pop out on a 3-0 pitch and struck out Zimmerman swinging to retire the side. In the 6th Gee left the game with the bases loaded and no out. Alex Torres came on and struck out the side to end that threat.  Erik Goeddel, Sean Gilmartin and Jeurys Familia added scoreless relief.

Offensively for the Mets they only managed 5 hits on the day and again it was Juan Lagares who led the way with 2 more hits.  Gee went 5 allowed 6 hits 1 run (earned) he walked 5 and struck out 5. His mound opponent Doug Fister went 6 1/3 allowing 5 hits while striking out 3.  Gee takes the loss falling to 0-2.  Fister gets the win improving to 2-1.

The Mets drop their 3rd straight series. In dropping 3 of 4 to the Nationals the Mets have not scored in 18 straight innings. The Mets fall to 16-10 on the season and are 11-3 at home. The Mets have now lost 7 of 10 since their 11 game winning streak. Monday is an off day for the Mets. Tuesday the Baltimore Orioles come to town.  Bartolo Colon (4-1 3.31) goes for the Mets.  Bud Norris (1-2 12.18) goes for the O’s.

Wright is too important to the line up to allow himself to be hurt.

Does anyone know the status on Logan Verrett. We lost him to the Orioles as a rule 5 pick. The Rangers picked him up from the Orioles. The Rangers designated him for assignment a couple of weeks ago.
Shouldn't the Mets get him back. He didn't remain on an MLB team the entire season. From what I understand is that the Mets would only have to pay 25,000 of the $50,000 they received for him. I would like Verrett back for some depth.

Im sorry but I simply don't have too much faith in a team batting Rubin Tejada 6th or 7th in a lineup.
The lineups this past week or so resemble a below .500 ballclub type lineup so im not surprised by these results.
Im still hoping the pitching can continue making attempts to carry this team to at least a .500 record ongoing until Wright and TDA get back.

Hang in there guys.

A team does a lot of good things if they only give up 2 runs in 18 innings.
