Mack - Thoughts on the 2015 Draft
First of all, thanks to those of you that followed me last night on the open draft thread.
We finally got around to the Mets pick and they chose Hole-In-The-Wall... err, I mean, Out-Of-Door Academy (FL) Desmond Lindsay. I had a list of the top 150 players that most draft pundits were working with and he was nowhere on that list. Still, I'm not saying this might be a bad deal.
First of all, I don't think you are going to like the rest of the Mets picks that start today.
The Mets only have $3,587,800 to sign 39 picks. This is the lowest amount of all 30 clubs.
The total amount isn't even enough to sign Daz Cameron.
So, what you have here is a horrible amount of bonus money in a very talent-limited draft.
You're going to see a lot of players with strange names from strange schools. Many may be college seniors that have negotiation power when it comes to bonus money. Other could be from JUCO schools or D1 and D2 level organizations.
The Mets scouting system is going to be highly tested to come up with a couple of rough diamonds here, but I'm not even going to set my sights that high.
Look for a filler draft.

How again do they have so little to spend? My wife would never put up with such limits LOL.
I would like to know what the formula is that gives the Mets so little money to spend. Can you find out, Mack?
Each pick has a money allotment attached to it. The Mets didn't have a pick till 53. If we had a first rounder our draft budget would've been roughly 2.5 million larger.
With that said I like the route the Mets took. Desmond didn't play much his senior year. That's why he wasn't to high on many draft lists. Keith Law ranked him most aggressively at 70. Baseball America also liked him. They had him at 102. In a year where we don't have much money to spend I like the aggressive approach. Draft a high schooler who missed much of last year. The injury wasn't serious. He's an athletic kid with some pop in his bad. It may wind up a bad pick but in the Mets situation it was the high upside pick I was hoping for.
The 1st round pick is the largest slotted amount so minus that from total. The 2nd through 10th are slotted picks worth X amount of $$. The rest of the draft has a different formula for players signed. The Astros had two early 1st round picks and have the most to spend.
