DOWN UNDER: Mets Minor League Results - 8-26-15

STAR OF THE DAY: Steve Matz and  Erik Manoah, both terrific. Hitting-wise, Monell and Guillorme with 4 hits apiece.

HONORABLE MENTION: Ali Sanchez, Eudor Garcia

 SCORES:

Las Vegas (71-57) 10-  New Or-leens 5

Binghamton (70-59) 3 -  Erie 1

St Lucie - DAY OFF

Savannah (76-49) 4 - Asheville 3

Brooklyn (30-33)  0 - Hudson Valley 4

Kingsport (35-27) 1 - Greeneville 0

GCL Mets (26-31) 4 - Marlins 5

Now Here's the Scoop:

Las Vegas' Darin Gorski came in hoping to crack double digits in wins. Gee had found the 27 below .500 New Orleans squad to his liking last night, and Mr. Gorski hoped for more of the same.

Well, he did not pitch well (10 hits, 3 walks in 5 IP), but the offense got him the win.

Huge day for Johnny "the Bopper" Monell, 4-5, HR, 4 RBI (.343). Promote him in Sept.  IMO.   Las Vegas is hitting .280.

Binghamton lost 2 last night (boo hoo), but that is forgotten tonight as an old friend, rehabbing Steve Matz, looked to show Mets management that he is ready and rarin'. Mets and Nats' head honchos had all eyes on this one. Nats were not happy, as Matz was brilliant over 6 innings.  Man against boys. Josh Rodriguez # 19.

St Lucie - a welcome day of R&R.

Savannah looked to start another winning streak behind 7-3 Casey Delgado. Casey was dandy, but got the ND.

Luis Guillorme (steadily climbing to .316) was terrific with 4-5, 2 doubles (15). Eudor Garcia (.297) had 2 hits, 2 RBIs (57).  Savannah win streak is 1.

Ben Griset (2-1, 2.68) got the win in relief. The lefty has allowed just 1 earned run and 7 hits in his last 13.2 IP, spanning 10 outings.

Brooklyn took on a team they trailed by a game, Hudson Valley, with new addition Desmond Lindsay in the line up today. Brooklyn's gain is the GCL's loss. Lindsay 0-4, 2 Ks in debut, though. Brooklyn shut out on 5 hits (.217) against strong pitching.

On a bright note, Brandon Welch, whose first outing this year was August 14 after his 50 game suspension, threw 3 innings of 1 hit, shutout ball with 4 Ks. Welsh, a 5th round righty in the 2012 draft, only has 62 career innings. Hopefully last night's game is a sign the 24 year old is entering the express lane.

Kingsport's Erik Manoah won his first game finally, following his last strong start with an even stronger one today (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K). His last two starts caused his ERA to nosedive to 4.13.

Chase Ingram and Witt Haggard followed with 3 hitless innings, completing the shutout - a good thing, as the K Mets managed just one run, driven in by Milton Ramos (.287).

Winningham and Carpio went 0-9 with 5 Ks (ouch!), but hitting machines Mazelka (.358) and Kaczmarski (.350) remained red hot with 2 more hits each.

GCL Mets Lost again. Joel Huertas lost despite a solid effort (6 IP, 2 R, 8 K), as Max Wotell surrendered 3 runs in odd fashion: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 3 R, only one earned, 2 BB, 3 K.  So he wasn't bad, but got charged with 3 runs.
Two of the 3 Wotell runs were surrendered by the next reliever, Raul Jacobson.

Ali Sanchez (.285) had 3 hits. Walter Rasquin (.295) had 2 hits, and 2 RBIs apiece from Yeffrey De Aza (.315) and Kenny Bautista (.186).

GOAT: Once again, lifeless Brooklyn bats.

Someone again explain Recker over Monell?

Zozo said...

Yeah I believe Monell would be a great lefty option off the bench in September.

recker is the better defensive catcher and has a good rapor with colon.

but for real, can someone explained why NImmo was promoted, if he's going to sit on a bench in Las Vegas, seems counter intuitive to why you promote someone.

@ Robb - I was going to challenge your argument, but I went back and checked all the box score where Colon has gotten pounded since June - Recker actually only caught one of them.

So, maybe there is something to be said there - still it would be nice if he stopped swinging a bat with holes in it
