Mack’s Morning Report – 3-9-16 – Jeurys Familia, Joe Zanghi, Desmond Lindsay

Good morning

Fantasy Pros did a feature on Jeurys Familia

Jeurys Familia, who claimed the Mets' closer role from Jenrry Mejia in the first week of April last season, ran away with the job to become one of the top closers in baseball. He finished 2015 with 43 saves, a 1.85 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 86Ks in 78 IP. These numbers were good enough for second in fantasy points among all closers in 2015.

Fantasy Impact: With the Mets built to win close games in a pitcher's home stadium, and a manager not afraid to go to his closer often, Familia should again see ample save opportunities in 2016. While he technically blew three saves in the 2015 World Series, only the blown save in Game 1 was actually his fault. His World Series performance should not make any owner shy away from drafting him. Once the three elite closers (Wade Davis, Craig Kimbrel and Kenley Jansen) are off the board, Familia sits at the top of the next tier. It would not be surprising to see Familia finish as the top fantasy closer in 2016.

The Mets have signed RHP Joe Zanghi. He was Reds 2015 24th round pick but didn't sign.

Zanghi is a 6-2 RHP who pitched in 2014 for Southern New Hampshire (3-G, 0-1, 10.80). Prior to his being picked in the draft, he went 6-3, 4-CG, 1.70, 81-K, 63.2-IP for Cumberland County College.

He will pitch 2016 as a 21-year old

David Wright, Jeff Wilpon, Sandy Alderson, and Jay Horwitz will attend Wednesday’s funeral for Shannon Forde.

 Fangraphs on Desmond Lindsay

I like his abilities at the plate, and I definitely see him making an impact with his power and on-base abilities in the future. He takes nice cuts for a teenager, and any strength gains he has will propel his home-run power upward easily. The strikeouts are a minor yellow flag, but not unexpected given his lack of professional experience and absence due to injury heading into the draft. We will have to monitor how his contact progresses this year as well as his outfield defense, but this guy has a chance to be really good. He gets nice praise for being a very hard worker, as well.

Mack – I found it interesting (and a little shocking) that Fangraphs had Lindsay as high as the #2 prospect behind Steven Matz. Has the Mets farm system regressed this far?

This is a strange ranking and we’ll feature a few more of the players as the week goes on.

Jon Niese's line today: 3IP, 2H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, HBP. 53 pitches, 33 strikes

Mets vs. Braves –

Mets go 1-2-3 in the first.

                   Matt Harvey – begins spring with 96-mph fastball… perfect first inning, sitting at 96… Harvey 1st inn:  6 pitches: 96, 96, 96, 97, 96, 96… 24 pitches through two innings… Braves load the bases against Harvey in the third (two singles, walk)… sac fly brings a run in… 3-IP, 3-H, 1-ER, 1-K, 2-BB, 41-pitches, sat 95-96, 86-89 off speed…

Joel Sherman - Harvey lost touch velo as 3IP went along. Spotted fastball well inside corner. Slider real good.

Harvey: "This year it's nice not hearing how does arm feel, you healthy all the time as to the excitement of just moving toward the season."

Wilmer Flores starts off the second with a single… out on Johnny Monell DP…

Nice double play turned by Dilson Herrera to Ruben Tejada…
2-out RBIs by Juan Lagares (2) and Marc Krauss in the fourth (3-1 Mets)…

Rafael Montero in to pitch the fourth… Adonis Garcia leads off with a double (here we go again)… followed by A.J. P. single… double play scores one… gets out if inning with 3-1 lead… ERA: 22.50

Mets fifth… Roger Bernadina singles, Michael Conforto singles, Wilmer Flores third hit RBI single… (4-2 Mets)…

Dario Alvarez in to pitch the fifth and gives up run(4-3 Mets)…
Michael Mayer ‏- Alvarez slider and control looked better in 2014, luckily the Mets have a ton of lefty options.

Juan Lagares – second hit in the sixth…

It was nice to see Chason Bradford have a scoreless inning (in the sixth… Spring ERA: 12.00)

Chase Huchingson with a scoreless seventh… 4-3 Mets

Zack Thornton continues to impress with a scoreless eight… but… gives up tying run in the ninth… than lose on a walk-off hit… 5-4 Braves

Just did my piece on Jeurys yesterday. He can be as elite as any closer.

I guess Fangraphs is picking on potential high ceiling. If so, Des Lindsay was a very worthwhile pick. How they process their rankings, who knows?

Zach Thornton, Dario Alvarez, and Raffy Montero not looking sharp in the early going. In years prior to this one, we start to sweat a bit....but this pen is so much better than any Mets pen in a long, long time.

Ex-Met Luis Cessa impressing in Yanks camp - 4 IP, 1 hit, no walks, 3 Ks. The other Cespedes trade chip - Michael Fulmer: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K.
