The Arizona
Fall League came to a close for the Mets players yesterday as the team they were
on, the Scottsdale Scorpions, finished 12-17 missing the championship game.
The story
all Fall was Andes Gimenez.
Ending the
Fall league season on a 7 for 12 streak, the shortstop led the league with a
.371 batting average and a .999 OPS.
In 18 games,
he had 26 hits in 70 at bats with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers, 15 RBI’s, 2
stolen bases and a .413 on base percentage.
He was also named to the Arizona Fall League All Star team and was named
the starting shortstop for the East Fall Stars going 0 for 3.
In was great
to see for one of the Mets best defensive players in the system after he hit
.250 with 9 home runs and 37 RBIs in
117 games at Binghamton.
In fairness
to Andres, it was a very cold and wet year in Binghamton this past summer.
Hopefully, Andres has turned a corner.

Yesterday in
a web interview Andres was asked which pitcher he was most impressed with this
fall. His answer? Blake Taylor.
Blake
pitched nine innings this fall giving up 2 runs. After giving up one run is each of his first
two outings, he turned in 5 scoreless outings.
His total 0-1, 2.00 ERA, 11 K’s, 2 BB’s, and 5 hits all in relief. After a good year in St. Lucie and Binghamton
this year, Blake is a potential rule 5 draft target or possible minor league free agent. I think there is a good chance he will get added to the Mets 40-man
roster before December.
Another
pitcher who did well this fall was lefty David
Peterson.
David
followed up his 3-6 4.19 season for Binghamton with a 0-1 3.46, mark over 4 starts
and 13 innings in Arizona. However, in
his first three starts Dave gave up no earned runs before having a tough outing his
last time out going 2.2 innings and giving up 5 runs. Next year, Dave may be back in Binghamton or
we could see him get one step closer to Flushing in Syracuse.
Jordan
Humphreys pitched to a 0.77 ERA in 11.2 innings in 4 games and was the only Met
pitcher named to the Arizona Fall League All Star team. In the game he pitched one inning against the
top of West Fall Stars lineup, including a strikeout.
Ryley
Gilliam was 0-0 with a 0.96 ERA in 7 games, 9.1 innings, 11 K’s and 2 BB’s. He only gave up 1 earned run but allowed 5
unearned runs to score. Ryley has moved
up fast since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2018 draft. Ryley will most likely return to Syracuse next
year and may make it to Flushing.
Outside of
Andres Gimenez, most of the hitters struggled.
Catcher Ali
Sanchez also saw time at first and third hitting .262 in 14 games and 42 at
bats with 2 doubles and 5 RBI’s.
Catcher/first
baseman Patrick Mazeika, .174 in 13 games and 46 at bats with 1 double,
1triple, 6 RBI’s, 8 hits and 12 K’s.
Second
baseman Luis Carpio, stared off going 4 for 11 in 3 games but ended up hitting .188
in 9 games and 32 at bats with 2 doubles, 6 hits and 8 K’s.
Finally,rehabbing
Catcher Juan Uriarte, went 0 for 3 with a walk in 2 games.
Great Fall
season for Gimenez, mixed results for the others. Let’s see how that translates into next year’s
spring training and minor league season.

Nice recap.......good to see some of our "kids" have success and continue their development.
I think Gimenez will be fine......folks tend to forget that he has played the last few season as a very young
prospect, in relation to the league's average age. Unless he is traded, I expect him to start 2020 in Syracuse, with
a shot at making it to the big leagues before the season is over.
Sorting out the organizational depth is another story.
If it's true that Blake Taylor was topping mid 90s during AFL then Mets need to go ahead and 40 man protect him. And in todays baseball it's good to have a multi inning reliever with experience closing out games.
I'm a big Ryley Gilliam guy. Also mid to upper 90s and a wicked breaking ball.
My favorite part about Ali Sanchez AFL season was his BB/K which for him was outstanding
Will Gimenez be trade bait this off season? If so, his asking price had to spike up. If not, Gimenez ought to be ready for the Mets some time in 2020.
Nice to see Ali pick it up at the end of the AFL season.
Carpio? He is a guy few talk about. He needs to do more.
Blake Taylor and Ryley Gilliam? Two guys who will pitch for the Mets in 2020.
Mazeika? After his .350+ debut along with retired Kevin Kaczmarski doing the same that year, Mazeika has just not hit enough. He was older than guys in that league when he debuted, so I guess his hitting was inflated. An MLB career for him seems tenuous at this point. I hope he proves that wrong.
In fairness, there was not a lot of hitting in the AFL - pitching seemed to have the edge.
David Peterson still has a ways to go to become the next Mike Pelfrey.

I just wonder how much of an affect losing our lease in Norfolk has had on our organization as I remember Harvey pitching in the snow in Buffalo right before his call up and as Gimenez goes from the cold in Binghamton to the frozen tundra of Syracuse can't be good right? Any way all I'm looking for is our own "Soto, Acuna or Torres" no problem right ...come on front office show us your worth the money!
Gary, Tom may bust out when I say this but maybe the Mets version of Soto, Acuna or Torres will be Reyes, Romero, or Adon from last year's Brooklyn team. Maybe a stetch but you never know.
More about the weather upstate this last summer. I try to catch one Binghamton game and one Syracuse game each month. It is always a game day decision based on the weather. I made it to 3 Syracuse games but all summer whenever I was planning to go to Binghamton the weather was bad.

I have not seen them on any team yet. Harol Gonzalez is he biggest name so far to appear. He gave up 3 hits and no runs over 3.1 innings in his first start and 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned over 2 innings in his next start. Overall he is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA as he hopes to be added to the Mets 40 man roster or be someone else's rule 5 draft pick.
I'd be VERY surprised if they leave him unprotected. He'd be a cinch to be taken.
Gilliam had the second most errors behind him in the entire league behind a starter with only 11 innings pitched inflating that unearned figure.
