As has been speculated for the last few weeks, the New York Mets this afternoon agreed to terms with James McCann.
Per numerous sources, the deal is just north of $40M and includes a signing bonus pending a physical.
Many feel that by signing McCann and not going after J.T. Realmuto, the Mets will be able to sign additional free agents like George Springer and/or Trevor Bauer.
Free-agent catcher James McCann closing in on four-year contract with Mets in $40M range, sources tell The Athletic. Talks are in final stages, deal will be pending physical.

The $40 million-plus James McCann is getting is just a touch over 40 and includes a signing bonus, per sources. Two years after being nontendered by Detroit, McCann gets a long deal — in the last seven years, Yasmani Grandal is the only other catcher to get four — at $10M per.

Beyond excited to work with @JamesMcCann34. I’ve heard nothing but unbelievable things about him as a player and person. Guy rakes at the dish and is always locked in behind the plate! Welcome to NY my man! @Mets

McCann is our man. Welcome.
Step 1. Complete.
(Actually, I am good if they don't end up doing anything else with the bullpen, so this may have been step 2).
I am not 100% convinced they are done signing catchers. Is Nido the guy as your primary backup? Could they go 3 or 4 million for a lefty hitter with some experience to complement McCann, such as Jason Castro or Alex Avila? Not going to bring you a lot of offense, but . . just thinking out loud.
Maybe Nido is the best option. Whoever it is will probably get at least 40 to 50 starts. McCann has never played more then 118 games nor had 500 at-bats in any year.
69 - If you want a Backup Catcher that is a LEfty with power - you may want to look at Patrick Mazieka...depending on what happens to the DH, he could be a good lefty option off the bench/ 3rd string catcher.
Yes, he is another option.
I just checked out the video of Richard Justice's comments on mlb.com.
There was another reference somewhere from a few days ago where the same sentiments were echoed by Joe McEwing, the bench coach for the Sox.
I am pretty happy about this one . . Springer is next!
