B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

Despite leading by six runs after two innings and
by three runs after eight, the B-Mets fell 11-9 at Metro Bank
Park last night concluding the seven-game roadtrip. Edgardo
Baez’s three-run home run gave Harrisburg the win and the
sweep over Binghamton. The B-Mets led 9-6 heading into the
ninth, but a Ruben Tejada error to open the frame proved to
be an omen for things to come. With two outs in the inning,
Marvin Lowrance singled in a run and Michael Daniel followed
with another RBI single to cut the margin to one. It was then
that Baez came up and hammered a 1-0 Jim Ed Warden offering
over the left-center field wall to give the Senators an 11-9
walk-off win. The B-Mets tied a season high with 17 hits including
three-hit performances from Josh Thole, Josh Petersen
and Jonathan Malo. Binghamton led 6-0 after two frames,
thanks to three spots in the first two innings off Harrisburg
starter Cory VanAllen. The scoring was capped by a Nick Evans
two-run homer to the opposite field in the second. The BMets
starter, Mike Antonini, lasted just four innings giving up
five runs. It was the ninth game this season that an opposing
team has won the game in their final at-bat.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

LHP Eric Niesen will make his
second AA start tonight and second consecutive against Trenton.
Last time out, June 13, Niesen started Game 2 of a doubleheader
and allowed five runs in five innings on just three
hits. He walked four in the start and gave up two home runs.
Niesen opened 2009 with St. Lucie (High-A) and was 3-4 with
a 3.28 ERA in 57.2 innings. Last season, Niesen appeared in
26 games for St. Lucie, including 24 starts, and totaled a 6-12
record with a 4.64 ERA in 118.1 innings. He was the Mets’
third-round choice in 2007 out of Wake Forest.
RHP Josh Schmidt will make just his third start of the season
for Trenton and second straight against Binghamton. He opposed
Niesen in Game 2 of the twin bill last Saturday and
lasted three innings. Schmidt allowed one run on four hits in
the start and struck out a season-high five men. He is 4-1 with
a 1.36 ERA in 33 innings, including 17 relief appearances. His
lone loss came against Binghamton May 17 at NYSEG Stadium
in a Game 2 walk-off 4-3 win for the B-Mets. Schmidt
split last season between Trenton (AA) and Tampa (High-A). In
the Florida State League, Schmidt worked as a closer, saving
16 games for Tampa with a 2.41 ERA in 30 appearances. He
was drafted in the 15th round by the Yankees out of the University
of Pacific in 2005.

THE NICK EVANS OF OLD:

Nick Evans turned in another twohit
effort last night in Harrisburg, including a two-run homer.
He has notched hits in 11 of his last 13 games, hitting .377
(20-53) during the streak.
