Prospect Update

The 2010 Crop:

Fernando Martinez – OF - AAA – called back up by the Mets on June 22 when Carlos Beltran went on the DL. Actually went 1-4 in a day game for Buffalo and pinch hit in Queens later on that night for the Mets… Martinez didn’t have avery good week for the Mets, but the Mets won most of their games. At this point, I’m changing my stance on him. Let him stay and let him play. It will pay off next year.

Jon Niese – SP – AAA – Niese had another strong outing on June 25: 6.0 IP, 1 ER… this makes only three earned runs in his last four games (26.1 innings). Needless to say, he has returned to the next guy in line to make the Mets rotation, something I’m sure won’t happen until next spring, but it’s good to see he is concentrating on control, rather than the speed he naturally has.

Roy Merritt – RP/CL – AA – June 24: 1.0 IP, 0H, 0R, 2K, win…. Roy is an enigma wrapped in a curve ball. It never seems like he is dominant enough this year, yet, stat wise, he’s doing just fine for a relief pitcher that turns 24 in September: 3-4, 3.24, 30-G, 11-S, 33.1-IP, 33-K… but… 16-BB. I still expect him in Queens for a September call-up.

The 2011 Crop:

Jenry Mejia – SP – AA – On June 23, pitched a so-so 5.2, 5 ER. 7-K… was actually dominant through the first five innings, but then faded… everybody in the Mets blogging world is now turned on to Mejia. His stats are fine, but you have wonder what they would look like if his 20 earned runs in 72.0 innings included the 11 unearned runs that crossed the plate while he was on the mound. No rush here… this is 2011’s rotation entry.

Brad Holt - SP – AA – Holt sprained his ankle… nothing bad… but he didn’t see any action this week… Word is he’s ready and will pitch between now and this weekend. I don’t have the starting pitchers confirmed, but I’ll post them later. Like Mejia, he’s a 2011 starter and one has to also wonder if he and Jenry have any chance of both remaining a Met for the next year and a half. My bet is Holt will stay.

The 2012 Crop:

Jeurys Familia – SP – A – Familia didn’t pitch this week due to the ASG break. Frankly, his 2009 hasn’t been that impressive. It’s okay, but he’s suppose to be more than an okay player. Just simply walks too many batters, (26-BB, 55-K, 76.0-IP) which constantly keeps him in trouble on the mound. Familia never was a strike-out pitcher (38-Ks in 51.2-IP last year), but he needs to work on his control if he’s going to make it at the next level, no less the pros.

The 2013 Crop:

Wilmer Flores – SS – A – returned to action on June 25 (0-4) after the all-star break, but still posted a .316 BA in the last ten games. I’m really impressed with the improvement he has showed defensively and the way he carries himself. It’s extremely hard to remember that he’s a 16-year old playing a man’s game. Only 33 strikeouts in 231 at bats, but also only 12 walks. And, I think saying he’s 6-3 might be an old stat… I’m guessing 6-3.5
