Buffalo 5, Charlotte 1

Omar & Co. continue to sign players that have been designated by other clubs, after a short stint in the Bigs. This, I’m sure, isn’t making too many GM’s thrilled to run to the phones and make a deal with the Mets. This week’s experiment is LHP Arturo Lopez (didn’t he play infield for the Yankees in the 70s?), who had a decent record at AAA this season, was called up for emergency reasons, was out of options, and was scooped up by the Mets. You can’t blame Omar for experimenting this way, especially after the success of Fernando Tatis and Fernando Nieve. Sure wish Lopez’ first name was Fernando.

I guess they’re right when they say you just can’t have enough good pitching. SP Jon Niese put his second great start together Saturday night, and boy, does a great pitcher make a bad team look good. Add to that the return of Fernando Martinez to the lineup and you’ve got yourselves a win. Neise stats: 7.0 IP, 8K, 1BB, 6H, 0R.

CF Chip Andres hit his 4th home run of the season and Martinez went 2-4, with a double.
