B-Mets 2, Portland 1 - Owen Shines

Despite having his scoreless innings streak end at 18.2 innings, Dylan Owen did not let it keep him from getting his second straight win as he led Binghamton to a 2-1 triumph over Portland Thursday night at Hadlock Field. Owen tossed seven innings allowing an unearned run on five hits while tying a season best with seven strikeouts.

Binghamton (31-54) came out of the gates quick, loading the bases in the first inning against starter Felix Doubront. Emmanuel Garcia doubled to open things up and Jose Coronado followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Then, Doubront walked Ike Davis to load the bases. After Josh Petersen lined out to third, Shawn Bowman hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Garcia and pit the B-Mets a 1-0 lead.

After four innings of futility at the plate, Portland (41-44) got on the board with a little help from Owen. Reid Engel singled to right with one out to start the threat. In an attempt to keep the runner close, Owen fired a pickoff throw in the dirt that got past Davis and down the right-field line allowing Engel to advance all the way to third. Ryan Khoury followed with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the score.

The B-Mets took the lead back in the eighth inning with station-to-station baseball. Coronado led off the frame with a clean single and promptly moved to second on a wild pitch. Davis followed with a groundout to short that advanced Coronado to third with one out. After reliever Andrew Dobies intentionally walked Petersen, Bowman came through again with an RBI single to right field scoring Coronado to give Binghamton the lead for good at 2-1.

Roy Merritt fired a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout before handing the ball to Connor Robertson for the ninth. Robertson struck out the side against the middle of the Portland order to notch his second save in as many chances.
