Bisons Game Notes

TODAY’S GAME:

Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons take on the Rochester Red Wings for the final game in a four-game series from Frontier Field (7:05 p.m.). The Bisons opened up the four-game in three-day series with an 8-3 victory Saturday night, then split a doubleheader yesterday (5-9 and 5-0). On Tuesday, the Bisons will return home to face the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in a two-game series from Coca-Cola Field. vs.

THE WINGS:

The Bisons are now 2-3 against the Red Wings this season, having won two of the last three games. Buffalo holds the 100-80 (.555) advantage in the series since returning to the IL in 1998. The Bisons have reached the 100-win plateau against two teams since rejoining the IL (Syracuse, 100-86).

NIESE-LY DONE:

LHP Jonathon Niese (4-6) was incredible last night delivering a complete game shutout in the second game of the doubleheader. Niese gave up only five hits with two walks and had a Bisons season-high 10 strikeouts in nine innings of work. The southpaw has won four straight decisions with 35 strikeouts to only nine walks in his last five starts. In those five starts, he has lasted an average of 7.2 innings per game with a 0.72ERA in 37.1 innings of work. The International League announced today that Niese was the League’s Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 29-July 5.

FEELIN’ SULLY:

The hits keep coming for OF Cory Sullivan. The outfielder went 3-8 throughout the double-header yesterday with a double and three RBI. In his last 10 games, Sullivan is averaging .425 (17-40) with nine runs scored, four doubles, and six RBI. Sullivan is now batting .297 on the season. He has also been one of the Herd’s most impressive defensive players recording his Bison-leading fifth outfield assist in game two last night.

HOT HITTER:

C Robinson Cancel has the team’s top current hit streak. The veteran has hit in 10 straight, averaging .316 (12-38) since June 19. In the first game of the double-header yesterday, Cancel went 1-3 with a run scored and a walk. Former Bison Wily Mo Pena has the season-high with his 13-game hit streak, May 25 -June 7.
