Prospect Report - The Big Board

The 2010 Crop:

Fernando Martinez – OF - AAA – Martinez started out this week on the shelf again, which continues to haunt the 20-year old. On July 9, he was sent back where he has been most comfortable in his career, on the DL. Boy, I hope this kid can buck up. He has so much talent and so little tolerance for dings. Thee is no rush now that Angel Pagan is back and Jeff Francoeur has arrived.

Jon Niese – SP – AAA – July 5: 9.0-IP, CG, 0-ER, 10-K… that’s about as good as it gets… Niese has returned to the number one pitching prospect and he looks like he has no plans on giving it up this season. I look for him to go to Queens soon, based on what Oliver Perez and Livan Hernandez has or hasn’t done this week.

Roy Merritt – RP/CL – AA – On July 5, Merritt gave up an earned run, in 0.2-IP (3.43)… his ERA is a little high this year, but he’s still in line for a September call-up. July 9: 1.0-IP, 0-ER, 1-K…

The 2011 Crop:

Jenry Mejia – SP – AA – Mejia was placed on the disabled list on July 6. Lots of questions here whether he really is injured, but, who cares. He’s already thrown a load of innings for two bad baseball teams, and he’s not going to be traded to anyone this season. Hopefully, he’ll rest up and get ready for winter ball where he can develop another nasty pitch.

Brad Holt - SP – AA – July 8: 5.0-IP, 10-K, 3-ER. This wasn’t his best game, earned run-wise; however, the real exciting thing is the fact that he has 19 strikeouts in the 15.0 innings he has thrown in AAA this year. Some balls are just hit a little bit past fielders, but K/IP ratios are the things that make a major league pitcher.

Ike Davis – 1B – AA – On July 4, Davis hit his first AAA home run. He followed that the next day with his second ball that went yard… Davis continues to show positive signs why he was drafted so high a year ago. His BA the past ten games was only .222, but most experts agree that he is a top 100-150 prospect right now and projectable to the majors. Thus, we’ve moved him up to the big board.

The 2012 Crop:

Brandon Moore – SP – low-A - July 4: 8.0-IP, 0-ER… Moore has burst on the scene this season and, due to his age, now becomes a competitor with Jeurys Familia for a possible rotational spot with the Mets in 2012. On July 10, he pitched another complete game shutout, and now stands at 3-0, 0.62 in four starts. Also 24-K in 29-IP. Moore is easily the most successful starter in the system… for now.

Jeurys Familia – SP – A – July 4: 6.0-IP, 0-ER, 7-K, 2.75… those that were at this game were witness to the fact he was absolutely unhittable during these six innings. One of the strongest pitching performances a Mets pitching prospect has thrown in years… July 9: 4.2-IP, 6-ER, 7-K, 3.19… Familia threw up this dud after giving up only two earned runs in his last 19 innings. We’ll give him this one.

The 2013 Crop:

Wilmer Flores – SS – A – well, the 16-year old is coming alive at A-ball… BA is up to .280, .282 in the last ten games… only 38 strikeouts in 289 at bats… you just gotta love this kid at this age. Has already earned a bump up but will probably be held back.

Robert Carson – SP – A – 20-yrs old - July 6: had a no-hitter going after five innings, but couldn’t get out of the sixth, yielding four runs… John Sickles said earlier this week that Carson would “definitely” be on his Top 100 prospects list if he was to update it this week.
