Dye and Damon
I would argue that Daniel Murphy's relative newness to the first base position and his current issues with hitting left-handed pitching means that New York might be better served by allowing Murphy to become more seasoned at the AAA level. Dye and Damon could from a formidable platoon at first base and each could fill in for the Mets OF as well. - link
St. Louis Mookie:
Yup, there's Mookie in a St. Louis Cardinals wool hat to support his son Preston in a World Series that the Mets were one base hit against Adam Wainwright away from being a participant in. Do I blame Mookie for supporting a blood relative? No. Archie Manning played for the Saints for forty-five years and he still rooted for his son to beat his former team, right? Of course, Archie wasn't decked out in Colts gear but hey, it was cold in St. Louis that night. I blame Carlos Beltran more for letting that first pitch fastball get by him against Wainwright in Game 7 which ended the at-bat well before that curveball ... but I digress. - link
Ike Davis:
He's probably a long shot to make the club out of spring training, because of his age. He's just 22, and is just a couple years out of college -- Davis was the 18th overall pick by the Mets in 2008 (out of Arizona State). He took a little time to get acclimated to his new surroundings -- zero homers in 215 at-bats in low Class A ball after signing following the draft -- but he put together an impressive 2009, with 20 homers and 74 RBIs in 114 games split between high Class A and Double A. It actually was the higher stop where he was at his best, hitting .309 with 43 RBIs in Binghamton.- link
Alex Cora:
Would you have signed Cora at 1 year/$2M plus a one-year option or gone with a one-year deal for Melvin Mora at ($1.3M), Bobby Crosby ($1M), Adam Kennedy at ($1.25M), Juan Uribe ($3.25M), or Felipe Lopez ($?)? Or, would you have given a minor league deal / ST invite to Chris Woodward, and/or gone forward with the backup infielder position an open competition among Frank Catalanotto, Anderson Hernandez, Russ Adams, Andy Green, Jolbert Cabrera, Jonathan Malo, and/or anyone else they could scrape from the farm? - link
Fernando Martinez:
RF (2009 – Power 77; First Base Rate 26; Discipline 54; Speed 40) - Coming off, what was considered by many to be, a down 2008, Martinez faced a series of nagging injuries in 2009, and eventually knee-surgery, that limited his playing time. Add to that a Big League debut that has to be classified as disappointing, and an even more disappointing Winter League stint, and you have a prospect in free fall. Let me toss Martinez a parachute, as played the entire season as a 20yo in AAA—posting the International League’s (INT) #4 Performance score. A victim of the Mets aggressiveness, more than opposing pitchers, Martinez continues to have a tremendous upside, with the ceiling of a power hitting everyday Major League RF. While the Mets may give him a chance to win a roster spot this spring, Martinez still has a Major area of improvement that would benefit from a return trip to AAA—namely he needs to learn become a more patient hitter, taking more walks. The other negative is that the speed that once allowed visions of him roaming CF has continued to diminish as he has matured, and, after knee surgery, he is on the verge of turning into a base clogger. We still like Martinez’s potential, but hope, much like Mejia, the Mets can be patient with him. - link
