More Beltran, Mookie, Chris Carter, Henry Blanco... and Jenry Mejia

More Beltran:

When might Carlos Beltran get on a major league field? Beltran is furious with the Mets and how they have publicly handled his surgery. He wonders if he should have been playing last year (in other words, was he properly diagnosed?). More important, he pushed to initially play in pain and then rush back in a lost season. The Mets probably should not expect Beltran to prioritize the team this time around. He turns 33 in April. His contract walk year is 2011. So I expect that Beltran will take care of No. 1 and make sure he does not do anything to hurt himself for a 2011 salary-drive season. - link

Mookie:

One of the most beloved Mets in history is back with the organization in a fulltime capacity. The Mets announced Monday that Mookie Wilson has accepted a position as the organization's Minor League outfield and baserunning coordinator. Wilson was last with the club as manager of Class A Brooklyn in 2005. "It's good to be back," Wilson said in a statement. "This is where I started, and I'm anxious to do whatever I can for the young kids in our system." The Mets also announced agreements with Bob Melvin, Guy Conti and Bob Fultz. - link

Chris Carter:

He was acquired in October as one of the two players to be named (the other was fellow first baseman Eddie Lora) in the deal that sent reliever Billy Wagner to the Red Sox last summer. He's got big-time power potential, topping out at 31 (with 115 RBIs) in 139 games in 2005. Carter, 27, is a .306 hitter in six minor leagues, split, until now, between the Diamondbacks and Red Sox systems. He's coming off a hot stint in the Venezuela winter league -- .362 with 10 RBIs in 28 games -- and is a decent bet to make the Opening Day roster, because, like Tatis, he can play outfield, too. - link

Henry Blanco:

Would you have signed Blanco at 1 year/$770K, or Miguel Olivo at 1/$2.5M ? Or would you have gone multiple years for Bengie Molina, Jason Kendall, Ivan Rodriguez, or Yorvit Torrealba? Or would you have re-signed Brian Schneider? Or, would you have petitioned Commissioner Selig to eliminate the catching position altogether and replace it with a pitch-back? - link

Jenrry Mejia

RHP (2009 Performance Scores – Dominance 64; Stamina 67; HRrate 50; Control 41)

Mejia opened up 2009 by thoroughly dominating FSL hitters—as a 19yo. This earned him a promotion to Binghamton, where he got caught up in overthrowing, and, while still flashing his ‘filthy’ mid-90s fastball, he walked nearly five batters per 9IP. The problem became even worse in the AZFL. Mejia will play the entire 2010 season as a 20yo. He has one of the best pure fastballs in the Minors, and a Change that has the potential to be a plus pitch. The downside is that he is extremely raw, and certainly is more thrower than pitcher at this point. Mejia does not currently have a Major League quality 3rd pitch, and his control can completely get away from him at times. Expect him to open up the season by returning to AA, where the Mets will have to demonstrate extreme patience with him as he has a tremendous upside. If he can harness his control and develop a third offering, his ceiling is that of a front of the rotation stud. Without a third pitch he still could become a lights out closer. - link
