I May Be Wrong, But… R.A. Dickey. Mike Pelfrey, Matt Harvey, BA Ranking
• I mentioned the other day after the last Santana outing that it then seemed like the Mets had three of their rotational pitchers ready to start the season. Well, after watching R.A. Dickey today, we might be up to four now.
• I read that Mike Pelfrey is now saying that he has played the entire spring training with a “high ankle strain”. Obviously the wrist of the hand that signs contracts is A-OK. If this is true, he should be treated the same way John Maine was when it was determined that he was lying about his health. I also want to remind everyone tat this is the time of the year that under-preforming baseball players get placed on the IR with mysterious injuries that were never discussed before.
• The Mets announced that Dillon Gee will not pitch as scheduled. Instead, he will throw a minor league game and he will be replaced by… wait for it… Matt Harvey. Why? Forget the media attention this gets you; what does it do to Dillon’s head. I continue to, year after year, realize I have never been qualified to be hired by the New York Mets.
• I could give a rat’s ass where Baseball America ranks the Mets minor league system. System ranking means nothing. You have 25 slots on your major league team and you can’t play more than nine of them at the same time. The Mets are one year away from producing four quality major league pitchers. Four. That’s a #1 ranking to me.

Could it possibly have nothing to do with Gee (Dillon gets his innings anyway)? ...and everything to do with dumping Pelfry?
Could be.
There is chatter that Harvey and Edgin may make the 25-man.
(fingers crossed, eyes closed)......PLEASE, for the love of GOD, make Pelfrey go away!!!!!!
Mike
Hey Mack just dropping in for a bit :) This most certainly has something to do with Harvey possibly (although STILL very tiny chance) making the 25 man roster.
IMO he's not ready. I believe he still should get a year of seasoning in Buffalo. If the Mets want a guy to replace Pelfrey then go out and pick up Piniero for league minimum!!!
As for Edgin his stock is way up now. A) He's pitching well, b) his competitors arent. I would be fine with Edgin on the 25 man however because he already has 2 MLB caliber pitches. What better place to fine tune them then at the MLB Level.
Harvey is probably not ready, but Pelfrey is ready...to be cut. $5M+ non-guaranteed contract = C-YA if he doesn't put together a good outing or two by the end of spring.
Also, glad to hear you think so highly of the Mets minor league system. Those rankings tend to depress me after reading so much about our guys. I get excited about our minor leaguers, read the BA article, and think "awwww, we still suck by comparison".
What do you mean you're not cut out to be hired by the organization? I don't follow that part.
I think it would be a mistake to have Pelfrey anywhere except Binghampton for at least five starts even if he dominates and at least until September in the minors.
Minor league rankings mean nothing. No one knows the minors like Mack does..especially the Mets system. If he says there's reason to get excited, get excited.

That first part was a joke....
