B-Mets Blast Past Fisher Cats, 14-3
Binghamton flexed their muscles and cracked the scoreboard in the first against New Hampshire starter Ryan Tepera. For the second straight game, the B-Mets launched back-to-back homers and put up a crooked number.
After Kevin Nolan booted a groundball at short to start the game, Josh Rodriguez stroked Tepera’s fifth pitch into the patio area beyond the left-field wall for his sixth round-tripper of the season. Travis Taijeron followed by threading a pay-off pitch over the right-field fence, giving Binghamton a 3-0 lead.
The B-Mets blasted away again in the fifth. Blake Forsythe started the frame by bouncing a double off the wall in left, extending his hitting streak to a season-best seven games. Joe Bonfe brought him home with a single to right and Wilfredo Tovar stretched the lead to six by launching a two-run homer to left, his first as a B-Met. Binghamton loaded the bases later in the frame, but failed to tack on against Tepera in his final inning of work.
B-Mets starter Noah Syndergaard calmly kept the Fisher Cats in check through five scoreless innings. The former Blue Jays farmhand scattered five singles, induced two double plays and prevented any Fisher Cats from reaching third base. His only blemish came in the sixth when he surrendered a three-run homer in the sixth inning. The drive cut Binghamton’s lead in half.
With the Fisher Cats back within striking distance, the B-Mets blew the game open against the Fisher Cats bullpen. Ceciliani hit a wall-scraping two-run homer to left field in the seventh off reliever Matt Wright to stretch Binghamton’s lead to five.
Binghamton tattooed Dustin Antolin and Chorye Spoone in the eighth to the tune of six runs on three hits and six walks. The B-Mets sent twelve batters to the plate in an inning highlighted by a two-run blast from Danny Muno and a three-run triple from Ceciliani.
Syndergaard worked out of a jam in the seventh inning and capped his night with a scoreless frame. John Church put up a perfect eighth and Adam Kolarek worked around a walk and two singles in a shutout ninth to seal Binghamton’s biggest win since a 15-2 victory over the Fisher Cats on April 21.
Syndergaard (2-0) struck out seven while allowing eight hits and three runs (none earned) over seven innings in his second win as a B-Met. Tepera (6-6) struck out a career-high nine B-Mets but also surrendered a career-high three home runs in the losing effort.
The B-Mets (53-31) continue with their five-game series in New Hampshire on Sunday evening at 5:05 PM. RHP Erik Goeddel takes the mound against RHP Marcus Stroman. The Horizon Federal Credit Union Pregame Show on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 4:50 PM.
POSTGAME NOTES: Travis Taijeron’s homer was his seventh of the season with the B-Mets and 16th overall (9 in 55 games with St. Lucie Mets)…Binghamton has scored 10 runs or more three times this season, each time has been against the Fisher Cats…it was the most home runs hit by the B-Mets since they hit six against the Reading Phillies on July 21, 2011…Tovar hit his last home run as a St. Lucie Met on May 1, 2012…the B-Mets have hit 14 home runs in ten games at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium this season…every B-Met scored at least one run = press release
