The Hickory Crawdads picked up a terrific pitching performance from LHP Luis Parra to defeat the Gnats 5-0 on Monday evening at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats are 3-2 on their current seven-game homestand.
Parra shutout the Gnats (5-6/48-32) through eight innings, allowing only three hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Parra no-hit the Gnats through the first four and a third innings until 1B Nelfi Zapata lined a single into left field to break up the no-hitter.
The Crawdads (7-4/46-35) scored the first two runs of the game in the third inning off Savannah starter Jake Kuebler. DH Nick Williams began the inning by lacing a triple up the left-center gap. After a walk to LF Nick Vickerson, 1B Ronald Guzman bounced a single into right field to drive home Williams. Vickerson scored later in the inning on an error by 3B Cole Frenzel to make the score 2-0.
Kuebler lasted five innings, yielding two runs, one earned on four hits and was charged with the loss to fall to 2-4.
Hickory added an unearned run in the top of the seventh against Savannah reliever Tyler Vanderheiden. A two-run homer from Guzman, his third of the year, in the ninth completed the game's scoring and put Hickory up 5-0.
The Gnats' offense collected just three hits, all singles.
