5/6/15

Minor League Recap - 5-5-15

Vegas now on a 12 game win streak. Nice.

1Minor League Player of The Night - Wifredo "the Bomber" with a 2 home run game in game 1, and 4 for 6 overall in the doubleheader, raising his average to .303.

Honorable Mention - Seth Lugo, for another fine start in Bonghamton. Chase Bradford and Paul Sewald, for both tossing scorelss relief again and sporting 0.00 ERAs this deep into the season.

AAA - Las Vegas - (18-8) 11 - Albuquerque (11-15) in game 1, and Vegas is 3-1 winners in the nightcap, running their winning streak to 12 games with their twinbill sweep.

Steve Matz solid in the opener to go to 4-1. Vegas with typical output, scoring 14 runs in 14 innings.

    Game 1 - LHSP Steven Matz - 6 IP, 9 H, 2 R, BB, 7 K, 2.04

                     2B Wilfredo Tovar - 3-3, 2 HR, 4 RBIs.

Game 2 - RHSP Logan Verrett - 1 IP, 1 run, as presumably he is being stretched back out. Fine relief outings by Rice (1.00) and Bradford (0.00 in 13 innings, including his 3rd save).

                    3B Danny Muno - 2-3, 2 doubles, .279

With the bevy of middle infielders around, Tovar gets overlooked. But again, he is hitting well, displaying uncharacteristic power, only 5 Ks in 80 at bats, and a plus fielder.  I'll bet he can get a bunt down too. A Tejada should be nervous.

AA - Binghamton - (15-10) 3 - Portland (10-15) 1

    RHSP Seth Lugo -  6.2-IP, 5-H, 1-R, 6-K, 1-BB, 1.37, 2-0

    RHRP Paul Sewald - 1.0-IP, 0-H, 0-R, 1-K, 0-BB, 0.00

    3B Josh Rodriguez -  2-4, 1-R, 1-RBI, .342

Great pitching from Lugo, again, in low scoring affair. Sewald just keeps putting up zeroes in relief.  Cecchini 1 for 3 with an RBI, hitting .333.

A+ - Palm Beach (14-12) 4  -  St. Lucie (13-13) 1

    RHSP Miller Diaz - 6.0-IP, 5-H, 4-R, 6-K, 3-BB, 2.57

    RHRP Mike Hepple - 1.0-IP, 0-H, 0-R, 2-K, 0-BB, 1.98

    RF Maikis De La Cruz -  2-4, 1-RBI, .292

Miller Diaz was solid, but lacked dominance needed to overcome very little run support, but it was not to be.

Conforto has cooled off (.298), and Dominic Smith goes o-fer again, sinking to .164, with no homers and 3 RBIs in 55 ABs.

A - Savannah -   no game scheduled

Let's hope Tovar has no acne on his back. Just kidding, 2 homers. Wow.

Amazing Vegas has won 12 straight with so many guys getting called up and sent down.

Anyone notice Dominic Smith at St Lucie.
Scary drop in hitting for him. Some nights they even have him DH. It's early but I hate to see top ten picks regress so much

Sugar -

Smith has been hurt again this season.

Even though, he's obviously been a huge disappointment so far in the system.

I had said in the off-season paying nearly $2 million for an at-best average backup middle infielder who can't hit and can't run was foolish when Tovar was already on the 40 man roster.

I agree with you, Reese. Tejada has large stretches of sub par, and then occasionally deludes us wuth a stretch of solid play. Can't see why Tovar couldn't do the same, or better, cheaper.
