We are a better offense with him back in NY, but the defense will take a step back from what Lagares would give you in CF. Oh, and I hope Sandy saved some cash for 2B (or 3B if Cabrera moves across the diamond),

A glut in the outfield? You have three starters as you did for much of last year with Nimmo and Lagares on the bench. With Conforto slated to begin the year on the DL, you have a dearth of outfielders.

Would love to see Flores at 2B and sign Reed. Also, chirped about Howie Kendrick since August. Good for this team.
Reese, I agree. You cannot assume health in the outfield...last year, Cespedes, Conforto, Lagares and Nimmo all missed major time. To assume they move to Lou Gehrig durability status in 2018 is a fond wish at this point. Bruce is worth the $$ on a per-game-played basis, as durability out of him is much more expected.

I like Bruce but he isn’t the best fit if they have strict limitations. Now, if they add another quality arm to the pen and add another quality infielder, then Bruce becomes an excellent addition.

If you were a third baseman, would you sign a deal with the Mets without first hearing David say he is hanging up the glove for good?

That is a great question and it essentially rules out Moustakas, unless the Mets are close to 100% certain that DW's comeback will not progress to the MLB level.
I think even in the most optimistic views, DW will never again be an everyday 3B. So, lets say he beats all the odds, gets back to the bigs, and can actually produce enough to be a part-time 3B and PH, 80 games max in the field. This is where a guy like Frazier or Harrison fit well. They have some flexibility at 1B with Don Smith and at 2B with Cabrera. However, this puts the squeeze on either Dom Smith or Wilmer Flores. Harrison is the better fit but he costs players and money. Frazier only costs money, his price should be close to Harrison, but they theoretically could have a log jam if DW can actually contribute.
In a perfect Met-world, the acquire Harrison and sign Reed, but I'll won't believe that until I see it, and then I still might not believe it.

Definitely not done yet......surpluses about, as do voids in the roster. I wonder if D. Smith and Lagares are now primary trade chips??

I think Lagares surely is.
As usual, Mack has the definitive word . . almost. I think Moustakas was the longest of long shots regardless of DW's status. If David does manage to work his way back, I do not think it will be at 3B. Rather, they will work him out at 1st, and let him platoon with the Domster. (If it came to pass, that might make Flores expendable in July.)
I am absolutely certain we are not done yet.
I do think that the Bruce signing pouts an end to the McCuutchen trade rumors, although they still could go after Harrison. Honestly, I would prefer they signed Frazier and moved Asdrubal to 2B. Frazier was a 3.0 WAR last year (compared to Harrison's 2.6) and is a somewhat better fielder, although not significantly. But with Frazier we give up mo one. And the money would probably be comparable.
We still need some additional holes filled, and I think they might do it with odd-lot pieces. Like Dickey for rotation depth, Lind for 1B/OF depth, Reyes for IF depth, and any one of number of relievers from our own farm system. If Alderson finds a way to bring back Reed I will flip.
How can we not be done? Didn't all the "reports" (including some here) yell us about the budget cuts and the cheapass owmers who only had enough room to add $10 mil or so? Bruce covered that and more?

I believed, from the get-go, that the story about reducing payroll by $20 million and only having $10 million to spend, was either a strategic plant to convince other GMs that the Mets were not a force this year or a fabrication by some beat writer(s). So yeah, the "reports" might be (gasp!)... Wrong? 😤
Tom, at my age you might have to see a very slow flip, maybe just a roll on the floor. Nonetheless, I would be extremely happy to see Reed in the pen.
Herb, I am not flipping any time soon either! Reed would be great - we then would have a reliever prospect surplus we could trade from.
