The Mets have traded LHRP Josh Smoker to the Pittsburgh Pirates for LHP Daniel Zamora.
Zamora (will be 25-years old in April) came out of Stoney Brook U. and pitched last year primarily at the A+ level. His stat line was impressive: 37-appearances, 1.86, 9-saves, 53.1-IP, 61-K. WHIP a little high 17-BB, 1.22.
Pitched in two games at the AA level so I assume he will be assigned to Binghamton.

Mets solved nothing here. Still have lost a major league lefty for someone two years away.

strictly FB/SL guy, FB 90-92, SL is a swing/miss pitch, but both below average. Career 3.5 K/BB rate, 56.7 GB% (5 HR/115 IP). Binghamton bullpen in 2018.
I respectfully disagree. Once they made the decision to designate Smoker, they essentially said he's NOT a major league pitcher. Whether or not that's true is debatable, but remember Jack Leathersich? He could strike out people in eye popping numbers, too, but couldn't find the plate consistently. Here they get a guy who is younger, providing more consistent results and who did not have to be put on the 40-man roster. I think this one goes into the rare win column for Sandy Alderson. It does not, however, solve the need for an immediate ML caliber lefty for the pen. Kyle Regnault is not on the 40-man roster and nor is PJ Conlon who has not ascended to AAA yet.
BTW, you'd think that Neal Huntington wouldn't take Alderson's calls after being burned by Jon Niese, Antonio Bastardo and others in recent years.

It is odd that Matz and Kay are from right near Stony Brook, and this guy pitched for Stony Brook. And Dunn is from Freeport, so they have an eye on local talent clearly.
Hopefully, he will be better than the other Z, Victor Zambrano.
Pat Zachry wasn't half bad.
Interesting "salvage job" by Sandy.......I don't think he should have designated Smoker in the first place, but since he did, it is better to get something for him, versus nothing.

Couldn't the Pirates have simply claimed Josh off waivers, instead of having to trade for him?
They may have been concerned that a team ahead of them may have claimed him first? I think the waiver process follows the previous year’s standings in reverse order.
Good trade, IMO. Smoker was only a wisp and Zamora has potential. Aside for being old for his age (lol) he has had good results.
Reese, it was Huntington who made the call, and Alderson jumped on the deal. Whenever he sees K/9 > 9.0 he creams.
