Mets Prospect Profile: 2B Marco Vargas

This is the next post in a series intended to bring awareness to some of the lesser-known prospects in the Mets' organization  This series will post a different prospect each weekday at 11:00am EST for the benefit of our fans.

This one could be special.

Marco Vargas is an 18 year old LHH SS/2B/3B, who signed as a 17 year old International guppy, out Mexico, for a paltry-ass $17.5K.

He played the majority of 2023 with the Marlins FCL team, going 120 AB  33 BB. 22 SB
.283/.457/.442//.889

Came to the Mets in a trade deadline deal, along with C Ronald Hernandez, for RP David Robertson

Vargas was the Marlins' #9 prospect.

He then played last season for the FCL Mets going 47-AB, 10-BB, 9-ST,... then moved on to Lucy... 26-AB, 5-BB, 7-SB, .308, 4.19-OBP.

MACK SPIN

There seems to be some really special potential here.

FanGraphs said that Vargas is easily the one Mets teenager that seems destined to become a star.

He has an extreme hitting tool for his age, recognizing pitchers, has total control of the strike zone,  and can effectively hit to the opposite field.

As an 18-year old playing A ball.

He is currently the Mets 6th top prospect and I can easily see him becoming a top 100 baseball prospect by the end of the 2024 season.

Yes, the middle infield future is getting crowded...which is a good thing...  but this is going to be the starting Mets second baseman in 2027 latest.

Get used to it.

Why can’t he be the third baseman? Supposedly, he plays all three. He has an advanced eye for pitches, but what we learned is he has added muscle this winter. That will help his fringe power be more consistent.

Plus, there is Jeremy Rodriguez… And Colin Houck…. And Acuna…. And Williams…. All these guys could become stars.

What I like is he is 6’, so while not tall, he is not short. And if he is 6’0”, then expecting decent power to show up is reasonable. I do like his speed. Where’ the Time Machine, to move Houck, Vargas, Acuna, Williams, and J Rod up a year in experience?

I just watched the Breakout game. The Mets have some very good prospects.Give time a little more experience and I see many of them in the majors. Your observations?

Should say " give them a little more experience"
