Coming into spring training, I never expected The Best…did you?
Relief pitching?
Best ERA in baseball (2.93)
Best WHIP in baseball (1.12)
Best K rate (157 in 129 innings)
Starters?
They have the 2nd best ERA (3.12)
They have the 4th best WHIP (1.11)
Pitching overall?
Just 11 HRs allowed in 22 games? Toronto has allowed 41.
2.99 ERA is best (Detroit 2nd at 3.69). Seattle 2X Mets, at 5.83.
Best WHIP at 1.11.
Remember…no Senga.
What a shame the Mets can’t take 26 pitchers north with them.
After all, 25 Mets pitchers have an ERA of 0.00, #26 (Butto) is at 0.90, and Severino would miss the cut due to his 1.00 ERA, just 27th best.
REMARKABLE.
AS WE WROTE THAT THE METS’ PEN LACKED DEPTH PRIOR TO SPRING TRAINING…

but it is still spring ball
and relievers usually only throw against replacements

The Mets, and the Lab, must really be doing something right. YOHAN Ramirez has eight scoreless, just one walk and eight strikeouts this year. Last year with another team, he pitched 6 1/3 innings in spring training and gave up 11 runs.
I am also very pleasantly surprised, although most of our games are against the same 2-3 teams, so we have yet to face the powerhouses in the league.
10 teams, including the Yanks and Tampa, have ERAs above 5.00 this spring, just as a point of comparison, and understanding it is only spring training. I'm glad the Mets are not one of those teams.

Yes, relievers in ST usually pitch vs replacements. But that is true of every pen, isn't it? Regardless of the exact numbers, ours is ahead of 29 others.

As we proceed through ST, I see notices that some playrrs are optioned and others "reassigned to the minors".
What's the difference?
Some have options, others don't.
That is a good question Bill. I think the 40-man roster status might have something to do with it as well. Just a guess here, but the 'reassigned' are minor leaguers that were on the spring roster but not on the 40-man and have never seen any MLB time. The options are those that have had some MLB time, but have minor league options and can be sent down without going through the waiver (or DFA) process. Thoughts?

Gus, this year will have lots of cut pain. How many of these guys would be on other teams’ opening day rosters?
