Sand Gnats Defeat Bartolo Colon,2-0

The Savannah Sand Gnats used a two-run sixth inning to stymie two-time 20-game winner Bartolo Colon and acquire their first win over the Kannapolis Intimidators, 2-0, Tuesday night in front of 1,307 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium.

Raul Reyes smacked his second triple in as many ballgames to lead off the seventh against the 2005 American League Cy Young Award winner Colon. Reyes came around to score on Jefry Marte’s double to put Savannah on the board. Marte advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and came down the line to plate the second run on a single up the middle by Eric Campbell.
The sixth-inning outburst spoiled an otherwise masterful evening for the two-time All-Star Colon (0-1), who struck out eight Gnats in seven innings of work and scattered seven hits. Kyle Allen (6-6) rebounded for Savannah snapping a three-game losing streak with 6.2 shutout innings and giving up just three hits with five strikeouts.

Marte’s sixth-inning double was his second of the ballgame giving him 26 multi-hit games tying him with Sean Ratliff for second on the team.

Kannapolis becomes the seventh shutout victim of the Gnats this season and the second in the past week as Robert Carson shut down Lexington Saturday night. This is the second shutout that the 19-year-old Allen has been a part of in 2009.

The Sand Gnats (10-9, 45-44) host a matinee game with the Intimidators (11-7, 48-40) tomorrow afternoon for Wet N’ Wild Camp Day starting at 12:30 p.m. Jeurys Familia (6-6, 2.22 ERA) toes the slab for the home team with Nevin Griffith (0-0, 1.50) making just his third start for Kannapolis.
