LAST GAMES: Dustin Martin launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap a five-hit day and secure Binghamton’s doubleheader sweep of the Portland Sea Dogs. After earning a 2-1 win in the opener, Martin’s drive gave the B-Mets a 3-1 comeback win in the nightcap. Cory Mazzoni led the way on the hill in game one, allowing just one run on four singles over six innings to collect his fourth win. Reese Havens and Martin provided RBI singles in the opener. Frank Francisco worked around a leadoff double to post a scoreless seventh in his first B-Mets save. Darin Gorski matched Mazzoni’s performance in game two, surrendering one run on three hits over six innings. His only blemish was a solo homerun by Bryce Brentz. Portland starter Mike MacDonald threw five scoreless innings before walking the first two batters he faced in the sixth. Chris Balcom-Miller entered, got two outs, but served up the three-run homer to Martin. Ryan Fraser took over in the seventh and worked around a walk and single to earn his first save.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Greg Peavey (4-6, 5.64) makes his 19th start of the season and fourth against the Portland Sea Dogs. Peavey snapped a nine-game winless streak in his previous start versus the New Britain Rock Cats on July 23. The righty allowed just one unearned run on three hits through seven innings to collect his first victory since May 20. In three starts against the Sea Dogs, Peavey has gone 2-0 with 5.27 ERA and received an average of nine runs of support. Portland has hit .351 as a team against him.
RHP Jeremy Kehrt (4-3, 4.73) takes the hill for the 19th time this season and eighth time as a starter. After the beginning the season in the bullpen, Kehrt was added to the rotation in early June. He took a no-decision in his last start on July 23 against the Trenton Thunder, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over 5.1 innings. Kehrt had a busy month of June, making two appearances with the Salem Red Sox (High-A) and two more with the Pawtucket Red Sox (AAA). In three appearances versus the B-Mets, the Indiana native has allowed three earned run over 11.0 innings (2.45 ERA). Binghamton has hit .275 off him. A 47th-round selection in 2008, Kehrt is in his fifth year with the Red Sox organization.
HAVING A DAY: Dustin Martin led the offensive charge for Binghamton with a five-hit day during last night’s doubleheader. The right fielder went 2-for-3 and drove in a run in the opener before compiling a 3-for-3 performance, including a three-run homer, in the nightcap.
FRANK FRANCISCO: Major League rehabber Frank Francisco navigated around a leadoff double in a scoreless seventh inning in the opener, earning the save. He is scheduled to make one more appearance with Binghamton before returning to the New York Mets.
NYSEG STADIUM DOG HOUSE: The B-Mets have gone 6-0 against the Portland Sea Dogs at NYSEG Stadium this season, including a four-game sweep back in April.
DOUBLE DIP SWEEP: The Binghamton Mets collected their second doubleheader sweep of the season. The most since they picked up a pair in 2010. Their franchise record for doubleheader sweeps in a season is five, set in 1993, 2000 and 2003.
SOMETHING ABOUT DOUBLEHEADERS: In the last three doubleheaders, the B-Mets have gone 4-1 and compiled a 0.71 ERA (3 ER in 38.0 IP). Cory Mazzoni has earned three of his wins in doubleheader games, amassing a 0.50 ERA (1 ER in 18.0 IP) in that situation.
GETTING THERE SOONER THAN LAST YEAR: The B-Mets needed 105 games to earn their 50th win. The 2011 Binghamton Mets did not collect their 50th victory until their 120th game on August 13 (50-70).
