Daily Mets Minors Report – 7-26-12

Date: 7-65-12

MLB –

Buster Olney -  Depending on how the Hamels contract is structured, PHI now has about $95 million committed to four players in 2013 --Howard, Lee, Halladay, Hamels.

Rays Designate Hideki Matsui For Assignment

MLB - Mets:

Jordany Valdespin set the Mets’ single-season record for pinch-hit homers with five

Joel Sherman‏ - Mets would listen on Hairston, Byrdak but only for pieces could help in '13. Not interested in A-ball yrs away Rather hold and play it out.

Mets prospects will play for Surprise this year in the Arizona Fall League. Myrtle Beach Pelicans manager Jason Wood named manager for Surprise

AAA – Buffalo:

RHP Collin McHugh takes the mound tonight for his eighth start of the season with the Herd. In his last outing, McHugh allowed just three runs in six innings to Charlotte on July 20. It was his second consecutive quality start. McHugh has not yielded more than three earned runs in any of his last five starts.

Wednesday – Loss, 4-5

Everything was going along just peachy-keen[i]… SP Collin McHugh was impressive (6.2-IP, 9-R, 5-H, 6-K, 1-BB, 3.86), followed by Justin Hampson (0.1-IP, 0-R, 1.98) getting Collin out of a jam.

Then, the pitching wheels came off when Fernando Cabrera gave up four earned runs in the 8th. Pedro Beato threw the walk-off in the 9th and the rest was history.

Seven hits by the Bisons, two of which were by 3B Zach Lutz (.297). I just don’t know where to project this guy. David Wright is ahead of him, Wilmer Flores is behind, he plays no other position, and he’s frequently injured. I understand he’s a great guy. Hopefully, he can take his career in a new direction come spring.

The attendance was great (7,543), but that’s because it was an away game.

Look for Mike Nickeas to catch on Thursday.

AA-Binghamton:

RHP Zack Wheeler (9-5, 2.99) makes his 18th start of the season and second against the Rock Cats. Wheeler comes off his roughest start as a B-Met. The righty allowed a career-high eight runs on six hits over just 3.2 innings against the Bowie Baysox on July 20. Wheeler baffled the Rock Cats in a win on May 23, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out seven in eight innings. Wheeler owns the sixth-best ERA and ranks third in strikeouts (101) in the Eastern League.

RHP B.J. Hermsen (6-5, 3.44) takes the mound for his 15th start as a Rock Cat and makes his second start versus the B-Mets. Hermsen defeated the Harrisburg Senators in his last start on July 20. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings. The Iowa native allowed a season-high ten hits against the B-Mets on May 24. He took the no-decision, allowing just four runs (three earned) over seven innings. Hermsen started the season with the Fort Myers Miracle (High-A). He was promoted after going 1-0 with a 0.78 ERA in four starts in the Florida State League. Selected in the 6th round of the 2008 draft out of West Delaware HS (Manchester, IA), Hermsen is in his fourth pro season.

Jason Romano‏ -  Watched top Mets pitching prospect Zack Wheeler today against the New Britain Rock Cats. Dude throws GAS!! 95-97 MPH -

Wednesday – Loss, 2-11

Boy, when this organization goes to hell, they don’t fool around… Zack Wheeler report: 94-98, plus SL 86-88, CB behind SL, some feel for CH, repeats delivery, consistent command keeping him from Mets… 84 pitches in 4.0-IP… only 58 strikes… 6-R, 5-ER, 5-K, 0-BB… fooey

Then… Frank Francisco eventually came in:  0.2-IP, 2-R, 27.00

3B Wilmer Flores – 0-4, .284… .190 in last 10 games

2B Reese Havens -  1-4, 1-R, .227… .278 last 10 games

LF Eric Campbell -  1-4, 1-R, 2-K, .317… .275 last 10 games

A+ - St. Lucie: -

Win, 6-5

Walk-off failed double play attempt.

3B Aderlin Rodriguez (.200) hit his 1st A+ home run.

5 Lucy errors.

CF Alonzo Harris -  3-5, 1-R, .279… .294 last 10 games

A – Savannah: -

SP Michael Fulmer did it again… 5.0-IP, 0-R, 3-H, 8-K, 1-BB, 2.51… we might be seeing he start of a limit of innings for some of these guys, even the high school pitchers. He’s followed by his sidekick, Marcos Camarena (2.53) who threw in two more scoreless innings.

LF Dustin Lawley continues to rake. He went 2-3, 2-R, 1-RBI, raised his seasonal BA to .281, and he’s .462 in the last 10 games. I can easily see a bump up to Lucy coming for the playoffs there.

Another hot bat has been RF Greg Pron (2-4) who is .333 in his past 10 games.

A-Low – Brooklyn:

            Win, 3-2

SP Gabriel Ynoa (2-1) doesn’t get the press some of the other pitching prospects get regularly… another splendid outing: 6.0-IP, 2-ER, 5-K, 0-BB.

CF Brandon Nimmo is leading off again – 1-4, double, walk, .229

SS Phillip Evans -  0-4, K, .231

Rookie – Kingsport:

No games scheduled (why not make up some of the rain outs???)

Rookie - DSL Mets:

The DSL Mets1 to DSL Mets2: Carlos Coronado, John Mora, Gabriel Feliz, Gaby Almonte, Manuel Hilario, Yoryi Nuez, Jean Rodriguez, Hengelbert Rojas, Randi Montero, Nabil Crismatt, Marcos Molina, Waldo Rodriguez, Jean Alvarez.

In return, the DSL Mets2 traded to DSLMets1: Jose Encarnacion, Pedro Rondon, Euner Rodriguez, Jose Figuera, Audry German, Miguel Rodriguez, Victor Liriano, Jose Maria, Yoseibis Solano, Marcos Gonzalez, Luis Carreno, Juan Marte, Enmanuel Berihuete, Richard Reina.

[i] The "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997) has a long passage about the sexual connotations of the noble peach. "Peaches were the 'Percian apples' of the ancient Romans. Their name, 'Persicum,' became 'pessica' in Late Latin, 'peche' in French, and finally came into English as 'peach.' The fruit, luscious to look at, touch, and taste, has been described as a pretty young girl at least since the ancient Chinese used it as slang for a young bride." And so forth. "Listening to America" by Stuart Berg Flexner (Simon and Schuster, New York, 1982) says: "A peach, something or someone wonderful, 1870 (a pretty girl has been called 'a peach' since the Civil War, from a peaches and cream complexion'). 'A peach of a'.1896; 'peachy,' fine, wonderful, around 1900; 'peacherine', also around 1900; 'peacherino,' 1905; peachy keen, humorous for 'peachy,'' 1955."
