Sometimes, all it takes to get on a roll is a single positive. Maybe the Bisons can use their Sunday success to build something greater.
After dropping a 6-0 decision to Indianapolis on Saturday to fall eight games back in the wild-card chase, the Bisons knew they had to finish the season remarkably. Nothing less. With a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon over Indy - the IL's best team - it's a start.
Indianapolis took the quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st, an early edge that could have deflated the Herd's spirit. But Buffalo came back with two quick runs in the 2nd, after being shut out the night before, to send a message that this game would be different. Lucas May ripped a two-out double to left field that scored a pair, and the Bisons took the lead that they would not relinquish.
With the Bisons still maintaining the tight 2-1 advantage in the 7th, May came up big again with a hit that ultimately provided the winning edge. After Matt Den Dekker led the inning off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, May sent him home with another hit into left field - this time a single. Buffalo took a 3-1 lead courtesy of May's effort, and the three runs proved to be just enough.
Three runs was sufficient, in part courtesy of Bisons starting pitcher Chris Schwinden, who made it through seven innings strong. Schwinden allowed just one run on three hits Sunday afternoon, issuing just one walk compared to five strikeouts. Schwinden left the game with the Bisons leading 3-1, and earned the win for his efforts.
Robert Carson earned his first save of the season for the Herd, entering the game with two outs in the 8th and retiring four of the five batters he faced. Carson struck out Anderson Hernandez to end the game, with the tying run on first base.
Bisons Notes: Catcher Lucas May was the only Bison to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI's...Reliable outfielder Fred Lewis had an uncharacteristic rough afternoon at the plate, going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts...The Bisons were able to grab the victory despite only recording 4 hits on the day.
