MLB –
Jon
Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Dodgers rejected an offer that would have
sent Cubs right-hander Ryan Dempster to Los
Angeles for prospect right-hander Allen Webster.
People briefed on the talks are saying the Dodgers are only willing to offer a
couple of lesser pitcher who may project as relievers in the long run.
Interestingly, it seems the Dodgers are more interested in fellow Cubs
right-hander Matt Garza rather than Dempster. http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/mlb/371372/baseball-headlines?r=1
MLB - Mets:
SP Matt Harvey’s first warm-up throw to the screen. Think
he’s nervous? Hits 98 in first inning. One hit and two strikeouts in first
inning. Oh yeah, did anyone ever tell you what a great hitter Harvey is?
Doubles in first major league at bat. Four strikeouts after two innings. I’m going
to write about him in my at 10am.
July 12, 2011 - The
Mets trade RHP Francisco Rodriguez and cash to
the Brewers for players to be named later. The Brewers later send LHP Danny Herrera and RHP Adrian
Rosario to the Mets to complete the trade. K-Rod was a vital piece of the bullpen down
the stretch for Milwaukee (29.0 IP, 1.86 ERA) and in the postseason (one run in
5.0 IP). He's been a disappointment in 2012, but he did his part during the
Brewers' impressive run last season. Herrera perhaps has an impressive future
in a major-league bullpen, but he underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this
season. The 22-year-old Rosario has struggled badly since a promotion to
Double-A. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/eye-on-baseball/19663968/retrospective-last-years-deadline-deals
Mets release P Miguel Batista.
Dillon Gee was never highly touted, never a top
prospect and was never thought of as anything more than a number five starter,
but for some reason he's defied all odds and has pitched to a 3.53 SIERA, good
for 23rd in baseball. I figured this would be as good of a time as ever to look
back at Gee's success this season given his recent injury to his shoulder and
the fact that he might not pitch again this season. Last season Dillon Gee was
called up from the minor leagues mid April and went on a run. Over his first
nine starts he had an ERA of 2.65 and a sparkling 7-0 record. The New York
media was sure the Mets had found their next great young ace and all the SABR
analysts wrote how he was clearly overperforming his peripherals and was a sure
bet to regress. Well, believe it or not the saberites were correct and by
seasons end Gee's ERA (4.43) was practically identical to his SIERA (4.48). To
say the least, Gee was not an ace. http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2012/7/26/3170675/dillon-gees-metamorphosis-into-a-front-of-the-rotation-pitcher
Adam
Rubin -
Q - Aaron Heilman is still
in the BIGs?
A - He's in AAA
Round Rock (Rangers). 2-1, 4.11 in 33 relief appearances.
Mike Puma -
Mets
still in the market for a reliever and backup catcher, says assistant GM John Ricco. He projects Mets making a
"small" move by 7/31.
AAA – Buffalo:
LH reliever Robert Carson has been promoted from Binghamton to
Buffalo
Jenrry Mejia has returned to the Buffalo rotation.
Thursday – Win, 10-7
SP Gonzalez Germen held his own in a spot start (4-ER in
7.0-IP), but Pedro Beato was dismal again (3-ER,
1.0-IP).
15 Bisons hits. LF Fred Lewis (4-4, 3-R, double, BB) and SS Josh Rodriguez (3-5, 2-R, 3-doubles, 5-RBI) had a lot
of fun.
RF Lucas Duda 0-4, .000.
AA-Binghamton:
Rained out…
July 28, 2011 - The
Mets trade OF Carlos Beltran and cash to the
Giants for RHP Zack Wheeler. Beltran certainly
did his part (.323/.369/.551) in San Fran, and he wound up signing a bargain
contract with the Cardinals. This year, he's been one of the NL's most
productive hitters. Although the Giants missed the postseason, it was no fault
of Beltran's. The Mets, though, landed a potential gem in Wheeler. Wheeler, who
touches triple digits with his fastball and boasts a hammer curve, has thrived
at Double-A Binghamton this season despite being generally younger than his
peer group. If he rounds out his repertoire, then he'll be a potential
frontline ace. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/eye-on-baseball/19663968/retrospective-last-years-deadline-deals
A+ - St. Lucie: -
Thursday – Win, 7-2
Tim Teufel’s son, Shawn, started for Lakeland…
RF Cory Vaughn wasted little
time hitting his 17th home run…
A big night for LF Rafael Fernandez (.244): 3-3, 1-R, double, HR, 3-RBI. 3B Aderlin Rodriguez (.224) had two hits.
A – Savannah: -
Win, 4-2
Nine more strikeouts for Alex
Panteliodes on Thursday. That’s 19-Ks in his last two starts (13.0
innings). No, I didn’t say Jack Leathersich. He
had a total of 11 strikeouts in his first 13 starts (29.1 innings). And, he
does this without a 90+ fastball. Mets pitching coach Frank
Viola called him “an enigma”. No shit.
CF Gilbert Gomez: 0-2, .264
DH Matt Reynolds 2-3, double,
2-RBI, .215
One thing worth noting at this point in the season. Weather
wise, this iis quite the grind at this point in the season. It’s normally
Afrida hot in Savannah at this point, but this year has broken all records. It
was well over 100 the past few days, with a high humidity to boot. The heat
index was around 105 at game time and it’s close to impossible to stand on that
field without having all the energy drained out of you. Also, these kids start
the day at 2pm running those effing cones. Physically, they have already plays
a game by daytime so it’s always 18 innings a day inside them. Not an excuse
for a bad season… just an observation.
A-Low – Brooklyn:
Thursday – Win, 7-1
The Clones needed a
good one like this… SP Luis Mateo (6.2 IP, 6 H, ER, 7 K, 7-1) started a little
shaky, but it was another quality start. Might as well keep him around for the
playoffs, right? I’m thinking Game 1:
Mateo, Game 2: Matz.
1B Jayce Boyd (.253) had a killer game… 3-5, 2-R… CF Brandon Nimmo (.228) had an RBI single and SS Phillip Evans (.230) even joined in the fun with a
hit. C Kevin Palwecki’s bat (.258) is starting
to heat up… .359 in the last 10 games.
A good game all around.
Rookie –
Kingsport:
Another doubleheader…
Game One was all Steve
Matz… he didn’t finish the game, but it’s hard to throw a better six
innings. 8-K, 3-BB, and only 2-H… ERA is 1.55… this is turning out to be quite
the draft pick.
2B Brandon Kaupe was removed after the first inning and I
will hopefully have a medical update later today.
SS Gavin Cecchini:
0-3, .232
Game Two – Win, 6-3
Kaupe is back in the
game.
SP Persio Reyes had another QC: 5.0-IP, 0-ER, 5-K… but Juan Urbina continued to struggle out of the pen
(0.1-IP, 2-ER, 4-BB). II expect them to shut him down after this wild
performance.
Rookie - DSL
Mets:
1B Miquel Leaf:
0-2, .326
2B Pedro Rondon:
1-3, 1-RBI, 1-K, .213
SS-2B Leon Canelon:
1-4, .299
LF Vincente Lupo:
0-1, 1-R, .350
1B Adian Abreu: 1-3, 1-R, .315
DH Elvis Sanchez:
0-3, .352
